UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist for the Bone Marrow Transplant Laboratory. The role combines advanced lab testing with donor coordination, linking patients to living stem cell donors through NMDP.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team in a full-circle transplant lab, supporting donor identification through transplant and recovery, with a daylight schedule and potential on-call coverage. A sign-on bonus is offered for qualified candidates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies for procedures, quality control, safety and compliance.
  • Process specimens for analysis with accuracy and timeliness following protocols.
  • Recognize critical/abnormal results and take appropriate action per protocols.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, perform QC/maintenance and manage supplies.
  • Maintain knowledge of techniques, instruments, and their impact on results.
  • Contribute to test development and method/equipment evaluation.
  • Perform High Complexity Testing (PA DOH definition) without supervision.
  • Provide first-line supervision of the section/department when delegated.
  • Train and orient new staff and students as applicable.

Medical Laboratory Scientist | Bone Marrow Transplant Laboratory | UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh

As a Medical Laboratory Scientist in our specialized BMT laboratory, you'll perform advanced laboratory testing while also serving as a donor procurement coordinator, collaborating with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) to connect patients with living, unrelated stem cell donors from around the world. This unique role extends beyond the laboratory, providing opportunities to participate in the transplant process and interact directly with patients and families during some of the most important moments of their care.

Working alongside a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you'll help deliver life‑saving therapies while experiencing the rewarding opportunity to see the direct impact of your work from donor identification to transplant and recovery. Schedule: Daylight shift, Monday through Friday, generally 8:00 a.m. to 4:00/4:30 p.m., with occasional extended hours based on patient needs and rotating on‑call coverage for off‑shift support.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance, and personnel policies.
  • Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow‑up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and act as outlined in predetermined protocols.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies cost‑effectively; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.
  • Maintain in‑depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, their interrelationships and physiological conditions affecting test results.
  • Conduct, direct, or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.
  • Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.
  • Assume responsibility for first‑line supervision of the section/department temporarily as delegated.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification, OR
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.
  • Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, And Clearances
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
