Job summary

UPMC Passavant’s Microbiology Lab is seeking a Full-Time Medical Lab Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to join our team at 9100 Babcock Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA. On-site day shifts with rotating weekends/holidays; candidates placed by education/background level.

Compensation includes a sign-on bonus and a structured career path within the Microbiology Lab; minimums and levels vary by credentials.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (MLT) or eligible/new graduate from an accredited institution.
• Bachelor of Science in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science (MLS/MT) or equivalent education per CLIA ’88.
• Experience: minimum 1 year in a hospital laboratory preferred; familiarity with medical terminology and LIS preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform test development, methodology/equipment evaluation and implementation.
• Recognize abnormal results and follow protocols for corrective actions.
• Operate and maintain equipment, perform quality control and calibration; manage supplies.
• Train new staff and orient students as assigned.
• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and respond to inquiries.
• Maintain knowledge of techniques and instruments and their impact on results.
• Follow laboratory and hospital policies including specimen collection and analysis.

Medical Lab Technician (MLT)

• $10,000 with a 2-year commitment

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS )

• $15,000 with a 2-year commitment

UPMC Passavant’s Microbiology lab is looking to add a Full-Time Medical Lab Technician or Scientist to our team! C

andidates will be placed into the correct level and status based on education and background; Lab Support Technician (min= $18.99) Medical Laboratory Technician (min= $22.12) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (min= $27.78) and so on!

Hours: Primarily 7AM – 3:30PM and 9:30AM – 6PM with rotating weekends and holidays; other shifts may vary.

Responsibilities

• Conduct, direct or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection and implementation.
• Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
• Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies in a cost-effective manner; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.
• Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
• All duties inclusive of an MLT (Medical Laboratory technician), and:
• Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
• Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and their interrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting test results.
• Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies. Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
• Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department on a temporary basis as delegated.
• Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.

Qualifications

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT):

• Associate degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as either a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA), OR
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, OR
• Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA ’88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
• Experience: Minimum 1 years’ experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS Or MT)

• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, OR
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, OR
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years’ experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory, OR
• Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA ’88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing.
• Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory. Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

• Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. New York License required for NY locations.
