Job summary

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a flexible full-time Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist to support the Microbiology Lab on a 10-hour evening shift, Sunday through Wednesday, with rotating weekend and holiday responsibilities. Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on experience and education.

The Medical Lab Scientist level salary starts at $28.90 an hour.

Responsibilities

• Follow procedures for collection and processing of specimens for analysis with precision and accuracy.
• Recognize critical/abnormal test results and take corrective action per protocols.
• Enter patient demographics and orders into LIS and verify sample integrity.
• Perform Moderately Complex or Waived tests; High Complexity testing with oversight/verification.
• Maintain testing protocols for precision and timeliness; notify for unusual results.
• Conduct and document Quality Control and report issues to supervisors/pathologists.
• Operate and maintain equipment, perform maintenance, calibrations, and cost-aware supply use.
• Monitor supplies and manage inventory to support workflow.
• Demonstrate dependability and prioritize department needs; respect authority.
• Follow safety guidelines for biohazards and chemicals and protect confidentiality.
• Assist with training and orientation of new staff and students.

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a flexible full-time Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist to support the Microbiology Lab!

This position follows a 10-hour evening shift schedule Sunday through Wednesday, and includes rotating weekend and holiday responsibilities.

Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Medical Lab Scientist level salary starts at $28.90 an hour.

MLS/MLT roles are eligible for a generous sign-on bonus of up to $15,000 for those who qualify!

Responsibilities:

• Follow established procedures for the collection (including phlebotomy, as required) and processing of specimens for analysis including the appropriateness and stability of the sample. Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
• Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take action as outlined in predetermined protocols.
• Processes specimens for analysis. Enters accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information and sample integrity.
• Independently performs Moderately Complex or Waived tests (qualitative and quantitative). Performs High Complexity testing only with the oversight of a Medical Lab Scientist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
• Meets established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. Recognizes critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follows-up according to established protocols.
• Performs and documents Quality Control according to established protocols. Informs supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
• Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies cost-effectively; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.
• Monitors and maintains supplies for functions the position is responsible for; uses materials and reagents cost-effectively.
• Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment. Recognizes priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
• Follows all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines. Maintains a safe work environment.
• Honors confidentiality of patient information. Follows all compliance guidelines.
• Assists with the training and orienting of new employees, students and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.
