Job Description

Title: Medical Laboratory Scientist

Location: On Site, Frederick, MD

Status: Full Time

Travel: Negligible

Position Summary

USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, collaborates with various military and civilian agencies to protect the Warfighter from biological threats. It conducts research and development of medical countermeasures, focusing on high containment (BSL-3 and BSL-4) infectious disease aerobiology. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will perform complex clinical pathology laboratory testing supporting USAMRIID's mission within AAT, including maintenance, operation, and quality assurance of laboratory equipment and tests.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary point of contact for AAT's animal clinical pathology mission, supporting research programs and NHP colony management.
• Perform microbiological, biological, and biochemical examinations on specimens.
• Conduct hematological, chemistry, and coagulation tests, prepare blood smears, and perform urinalysis.
• Oversee and review clinical pathology test results and procedures.
• Evaluate and interpret laboratory test results in compliance with GLP SOPs and ASVCP QALs.
• Perform quality control, equipment validation, and maintenance, maintaining detailed records.
• Identify anomalies in test results and quality control data, troubleshooting as needed.
• Assist in research, testing method evaluation, and training.
• Prepare laboratories for GLP audits and inspections.
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness, safety, and inventory management.
• Document procedures, prepare reports, SOPs, and manuscripts.
• Participate in meetings, give presentations, and communicate technical information.
• Report safety or SOP non-compliance issues promptly.
• Support infection studies in BSL-2, BSL-3, or BSL-4 environments, managing study protocols and sample processing.
• Cross-train in other laboratory support functions.
• Perform routine maintenance of containment areas and laboratories.

Minimum Requirements

• Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or AMT).
• Bachelor's degree required; master's preferred.
• 7+ years of post-graduate experience in a high-throughput diagnostic or research lab.
• Experience with clinical testing in BSL-3/4 environments is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of GLP work is preferred.
• Eligibility for BPRP and CS-PRP programs; active status preferred.
• Must obtain/maintain a Secret clearance; active clearance preferred.
