Under general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, this role assists clinical laboratory scientists and lab technicians at Dilkon Medical Center (DMC) and Winslow Indian Health Care Center (WIHCC). The primary duty is performing phlebotomy services while supporting the laboratory mission and maintaining confidentiality of all privileged information.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Procure blood samples by venipuncture, fingerstick, or heelstick on patients of all ages using prescribed safety and infection control procedures.
- Assess patient condition and medication schedule to ensure a quality specimen is drawn for accurate test results.
- Determine specimen collection times based on caregiver input.
- Evaluate physician orders, confirm test orders, and accession orders for both in‑house and reference laboratory samples into the Resource Patient Management System (RPMS).
- Consult with providers on unusual orders or requests.
- Cancel and consolidate duplicated test orders to avoid unnecessary patient draws.
- Identify patients accurately according to laboratory policy and document appropriate information such as time, date, initial and type of test, and patient status.
- Explain collection procedures and provide general testing information to facilitate patient understanding and reduce anxiety.
- Give patient instructions to ensure accurate specimen collection or preparation.
- Serve as a resource to patient‑care areas regarding test ordering or specimen collection questions.
- Process specimens promptly: centrifuge in‑house samples and send correct samples to the appropriate laboratory area; perform aliquoting and packaging for reference laboratory samples.
- Perform moderately complex tests in chemistry, coagulation, hematology, serology, and urinalysis (e.g., hemoglobin, hematocrit, CBC, sedimentation rate, urinalysis screening).
- Receive instrument results and pass information to higher‑grade personnel for acceptance and approval.
- Maintain laboratory records to ensure proper storage and disposal.
- Train and orient new phlebotomy employees and students as needed.
- Order department supplies to ensure uninterrupted specimen collection.
- Attend meetings regarding safety and quality control to stay informed of current lab and hospital policies.
- Organize and maintain specimen storage per department policy and procedure.
- Maintain centrifuges and refrigerators through scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance.
- Set up or perform primary inoculation of specimens onto appropriate biological media; prepare slides for microscopic examination.
- Deliver paper reports to appropriate providers.
- Participate in the laboratory quality assurance program.
- Complete tasks or duties assigned by a supervisor.
- Uphold confidentiality and patient care principles to the fullest extent.

- Follow WIHCC personnel policies, departmental rules, and regulations.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED; Certified Phlebotomist required or Medical Assistant certification with at least three months of recent experience in a clinical laboratory phlebotomy setting.
- Preferred experience with point‑of‑care test review.
- Bilingualism in English and Navajo language preferred.
- Valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license.
- Pass a background investigation and meet Child Care position requirements as defined by the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (ICPFVP Act).
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

Physical Demands
Employee must routinely walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle objects, reach, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds is required.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office or outdoor setting with moderate noise levels. The environment involves exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, and potentially dangerous equipment. Regular adherence to safety protocols is required. Work schedules may include evening, weekend, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular schedules as operational needs dictate.
As required by P.L. 93‑638, absolute preference will be given to qualified Navajo applicants. If none are available, preference will be given to qualified American Indian applicants.
