Role Overview

Under general supervision of the Chief Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician provides essential support by performing routine pharmacy tasks, maintaining confidentiality, and upholding WIHCC’s Vision, Mission, and Value Statements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Work with the Pharmacist to set up prescription orders from familiar items, including prepackaged and pre‑labeled containers, and count from stock bottles following the physician’s medication order.
  • Reconstitute certain sterile medications, measuring and mixing specified amounts, and prepare them for final check by the Pharmacist.
  • Receive, store, account for, and order department supplies in coordination with the Chief Pharmacist, using standard stock levels or directing pharmacy aids.
  • Prepackage or direct pharmacy aids in prepackage all pharmaceuticals for use by the Pharmacist.
  • Compound, package, and label complex products; measure, weigh, and mix ingredients using a formula card, affixing a proper label for final check.
  • Receive and fill orders from clinic exam rooms, urgent‑care rooms, field clinics, etc., and use substitute items when needed.
  • Conduct routine tours of service areas to monitor replenishment levels.
  • Identify customer/patient needs, respond promptly, and anticipate and prevent delays.
  • Perform basic calculations for compounding and order processing with accuracy.
  • Adhere to regulatory and organizational standards for patient care and safety, and to all policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned station checks thoroughly each month.
  • Answer phones and respond to emails during each shift.
  • Provide training and orientation to new pharmacy staff and students.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting on pharmacy automation and, when necessary, contact vendors for support.
  • Demonstrate initiative to maintain and enhance necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Execute other related tasks as planned by WIHCC and approved by the Chief Pharmacist.
  • Uphold confidentiality, patient care principles, and professional ethical standards.
  • Adhere to WIHCC Personnel Policies, departmental rules, and regulations.
  • Interact honestly, trustworthily, and dependably with patients, employees, visitors, and vendors.
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity, maintaining compliance with all Human Resources requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience working in a pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy Technician certification (PTCB or ExCPT) preferred.
  • Must attain BLS/CPR certification within six months of employment.
  • Proficiency with computers; RPMS/EHR experience a plus.
  • Fluent in Navajo language preferred; bilingual Spanish/Navajo preferred.
  • Valid unrestricted and insurable driver’s license required.
  • Successful background investigation and suitability for a Child Care position required.
  • Position considered a Child Care role, subject to the ICPFVP Act requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Ability
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, formulae, strengths, and unit measurements.
  • Knowledge of routine pharmacy procedures and systems.
  • Knowledge of RPMS/EHR and pharmacy automation software.
  • Strong work ethic and confidentiality application.
  • Computer skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Operational skill with pharmacy equipment (counting and labeling machines).
  • Dependability in attendance and job performance.
  • Reliability in meeting attendance and overtime requirements.

Physical Demands

The employee regularly walks, sits, uses hands and fingers, handles or feels objects and equipment, reaches with hands and arms, and communicates effectively by talking and hearing. The employee frequently stands, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls, and may occasionally lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Work is performed in an office setting or outdoors with moderate noise levels. The environment may involve exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, or potentially dangerous equipment, requiring adherence to all safety protocols. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, overnight shifts, extended hours, or irregular shifts as operational needs dictate.
