Overview
Organize and direct the daily activities of the laboratory. Responsible for Medical Lab Technician orientation, as well as semi-annual and annual competencies. Conduct and oversee quality assurance and quality control, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting lab results. Work as a team member that may validate and coordinate the work of others to ensure quality and accurate patient results. Collaborate with the team to suggest process improvements and serve as a knowledge resource for other team members. Have thorough knowledge of the team’s processes.

Responsibilities
• Ensure laboratory compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Monitor testing and quality control in lab spaces within the hospital and associated departments.
• Maintain records of competency and training for all staff performing laboratory testing.
• Responsible for high-complexity testing performed by testing personnel.
• Assess and plan for section needs with guidance from the Medical Laboratory Director and Manager, and make appropriate purchase recommendations.
• Coordinate daily activities of the specified area.
• Provide guidance and direction to staff to achieve compliance with organizational and unit policies and standards.
• Document according to Unit Standards and documentation guidelines.
• Communicate with other members of the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
• Participate in unit operations, demonstrating professional behaviors and supporting unit goals.
• Engage in non-patient care activities including educational activities, Performance Improvement, standards development, and committee participation.
• Attend scheduled team leader/supervisory meetings.
• Assist with managerial activities such as performance evaluations, staffing, productivity management, and employee counseling. Act as a preceptor for all unit procedures.
• Monitor supply inventory and cost containment activities.
• Maintain a basic understanding of all clinical processes in the Lab.
• Maintain appropriate laboratory records.
• Adjust methods and procedures for different patient populations (neonates, pediatrics, adults, geriatrics).
• Responsible for quality control procedures and instrument checks.
• Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes safety and reduces errors.
Qualifications
Education:
Associate of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technician accredited program required. A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, biology, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of experience in Medical Laboratory Technology required.
License(s)/Certification(s):
Board certification in an approved laboratory certification program such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Valid driver’s license if driving for work-related reasons.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to delegate wisely, exercise good judgment, maintain good interpersonal relationships, adapt to change, evaluate critically, think creatively, and implement change positively. Demonstrate knowledge and skills relevant to the assigned area. Capable of providing and supervising services for diverse patient populations. Effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently, write reports, procedures, protocols, and respond tactfully to questions from patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Completion of unit and hospital orientation, and competency testing. Demonstrates integrity, initiative, and flexibility.
Other:
Experience with modern laboratory equipment, office equipment, electronic and mechanical patient care equipment, audiovisual equipment, and computer systems.
