- Perform routine and complex clinical laboratory tests in support of patient diagnosis and treatment across multiple disciplines such as chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, and transfusion services, as assigned.
- Accurately receive, label, process, and analyze patient specimens, ensuring proper identification, handling, and storage in accordance with MUSC protocols and regulatory standards.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of laboratory analyzers and instruments, performing calibrations, maintenance, and minor repairs to ensure optimal performance.
- Review and validate test results, recognize critical values, and promptly communicate urgent or life-threatening findings to the appropriate clinical providers.
- Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities, participating in proficiency testing and continuous improvement initiatives to maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance.
- Adhere to all infection control, biosafety, and safety procedures, including the proper use of PPE, safe handling of biohazardous materials, and maintenance of a clean, organized work area.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare team members, providing technical information and clarification on test methodologies, limitations, and result interpretation as appropriate.
- Contribute to training and orientation of new staff, students, and rotating personnel, modeling MUSC's values of collaboration, inclusion, and excellence in clinical practice.
- Participate in process improvement, research, and innovation initiatives within the laboratory and broader MUSC system to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed in a full-time capacity to support the 24/7 operations of the Florence, SC laboratory.
- Clinical laboratory testing in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, and blood bank (as applicable)
- Specimen collection, processing, and handling according to CLIA and CAP standards
- Operation, calibration, and troubleshooting of automated analyzers and laboratory instruments
- Quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing procedures
- Use of laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR)
- Phlebotomy skills and safe venipuncture techniques
- Understanding of regulatory and safety standards (CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, OSHA)
- Interpretation and validation of laboratory results
- Infection prevention and biosafety practices
- Data entry accuracy and documentation in a high-volume clinical setting
- Effective communication with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary care teams
- Time management and prioritization in a fast-paced, 24/7 lab environment

- ASCP or AMT certification as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS)
- South Carolina state licensure as applicable for laboratory professionals
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (preferred or per MUSC policy)
- Completion of a NAACLS-accredited MLT or MLS program
