Job Summary

  • The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine and complex laboratory tests in areas such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and blood banking
  • The role involves conducting diagnostic testing, analyzing test results, and maintaining laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable outcomes
  • The MLT collaborates with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to provide timely and effective patient care in an acute care hospital setting

Essential Functions

  • Perform laboratory tests in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, and immunohematology
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment according to established protocols
  • Analyze test results for accuracy, identify anomalies, and take corrective action as necessary
  • Document test results and report critical values promptly to appropriate personnel
  • Maintain quality control and quality assurance protocols to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection as required
  • Assist in training new laboratory staff and students on laboratory procedures and protocols
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to infection control and safety protocols
  • Communicate effectively with medical staff, patients, and other departments regarding laboratory procedures and test results
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives and continuing education to maintain clinical competencies

Education

  • Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Applied Science, Biology, or related field required

Licenses/Certifications

  • ASCP or AMT certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within timeframe specified in facility policy

Experience

  • 1-2 years of clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory setting preferred
