Job summary

Toledo Clinic in Ohio seeks a Laboratory Technician to perform chemical, bacteriological, serological and microscopic procedures under supervision. You will maintain records, quality control, and equipment, ensuring timely STAT handling and accurate reporting.

Ideal candidates have four years of college (chemistry/biology/microbiology) and ASCP/AMT registry readiness. Two years of lab testing experience is preferred; some extended hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • Requires four years of college including chemistry, biology and microbiology.
  • ASCP/AMT registry preferred.
  • Two years of clinical laboratory testing experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs chemical, bacteriological, serological and microscopic procedures in designated laboratory sections.
  • Operates under supervision of Lab Supervisor and maintains quality control records.
  • Maintains records of procedures, patient results and QC; plots Levey-Jennings charts.
  • Reviews laboratory reports for accuracy and verifies results.
  • Maintains equipment, temperature logs and preventive maintenance records.
  • Maintains inventory of lab supplies and reorders as needed.
  • Addresses STAT requests promptly and communicates results to authorized recipients.
  • Participates in research and development of new procedures; performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

Performs chemical, bacteriological, serological and microscopic procedures in one or more functional laboratory sections.

Works under the supervision of the Lab Supervisor.

  • Consistently arrives at work on time and adheres to regular work schedule.
  • Performs procedures in designated areas of the laboratory for which competency has been verified by a qualified technician/technologist and/or supervisor.
  • Maintains records of procedure performance, patient results, and quality control in the laboratory section. Plots results of control runs on Levey-Jennings charts. Follows defined protocol for investigating out-of-control runs, and implements necessary remedial action.
  • Reviews and verifies accuracy of relevant laboratory reports.
  • Maintains equipment, logging daily temp. checks, and logs preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintains proper inventory of laboratory supplies, informing in advance of reordering needs.
  • When presented with a "STAT" request(s), stops all other routine activities and promptly addresses the STAT. Calls or faxes the results promptly as indicated on the request to individuals authorized to receive lab results/information.
Other Essential Duties May Include but Are Not Limited To
  • May participate in research and development of new procedures and changes to existent procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Consistently arrives at work in appropriate/professional attire.
  • Completes all tasks within established time frame.
  • Adheres to all clinic policies and procedures.
  • Knows, understands and adheres to all laboratory, Clinic and/or OSHA safety standards.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment by daily cleaning, emptying trash containers, cleaning up spills and all other housekeeping duties necessary to sustain an appropriate work area.
  • Supports staffing by being able to work extended or altered hours when necessary.
  • Seeks appropriate tasks when primary tasks are completed and assists co-workers as needed.
  • Demonstrates adaptability to expanded roles.
Education:
  • Four (4) years college course including chemistry, biology and microbiology necessary to take (ASCP/AMT) registry.
Preferred:
  • ASCP/AMT.
  • Two years of experience in clinical laboratory testing.
