Job Summary

Medical Laboratory Scientists are responsible for testing patient specimens, ensuring the accuracy of tests, and communicating results to providers.

Reports to:

Supervisor, Medical Laboratory

Job Specific Responsibilities

Daily assignments may include but are not limited to:

1. Prepare specimens for testing.
2. Test patient specimens, establish and ensure acceptable levels of quality control are maintained.
3. Ensure compliance with requirements of CAP, AABB, DNV, and FDA (as applicable to section/shift).
4. Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting to ensure operational status.
5. Perform all other duties related to the medical laboratory as assigned.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or Clinical Laboratory Science.

Skills and Abilities

• Understand and articulate correct procedures for patient identification, specimen labeling, and verification of adequate sampling.
• Proficient in the use of computer peripherals.
• Clear communication skills; fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English.

Interaction with Other Departments and Relationships

This position involves significant interaction with nursing staff and other hospital departments.

Physical Capabilities

Expect to stand for long periods and walk frequently. The role requires frequent stooping, sitting, reaching, bending, and kneeling. May be required to carry items up to 50 pounds. Near visual and color acuity are necessary.

Environmental / Working Conditions

This position involves indoor environmental conditions with potential temperature fluctuations and minimal exposure to chemicals used in cleaning, staining, and testing.
