Job description

Position Title

Medical Lab Scientist

Location: Westwood Medical Pavilion - West

Position Summary / Career Interest: The Medical Lab Scientist provides comprehensive laboratory testing for patients. The role involves ensuring that laboratory results are accurate, timely, and of high quality. The shift for this role is Monday - Friday with rotating weekend schedules.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:

  1. Analyzes patient, control, and proficiency testing specimens and records results promptly according to laboratory policy.
  2. Calibrates, maintains, operates, and troubleshoots instrumentation issues; completes appropriate documentation.
  3. Completes continuing education and submits documentation where applicable.
  4. Follows regulatory, accreditation, safety, hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
  5. Instructs, orients, and mentors students, employees, residents, patients, and other healthcare providers as applicable.
  6. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies; accurately prepares, labels, and stores reagents, standards, controls, and specimens for analysis.
  7. Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  8. Performs phlebotomy and sample collection as applicable.
  9. Reviews and correlates laboratory test results with patient conditions, recognizing abnormal, critical, or alert values; verifies accuracy and initiates corrective actions when needed.
  10. May be required to float to other locations within the organization.
  11. Performs product preparations in compliance with FDA, cGMP, AABB standards, and blood bank procedures if applicable.
  12. Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary to perform duties safely and minimize risks.
  13. Must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
  14. Other duties as assigned, with skills and duties varying depending on the department or unit.

Required Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor of Science in Biological, Physical, Chemical, or Clinical Laboratory Science / Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
  2. High School Graduate.

Required Licensure and Certification:

  1. Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP), AMT, or equivalent, or eligible (must be completed within 6 months of hire) within 180 days.

Knowledge Requirements:

  1. Meets CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.
