Job description

The Medical Lab Assistant performs moderate complexity laboratory procedures, accurately reporting results. Ensures quality of results and proper operation of instrumentation. Assists Medical Technologists with non-testing tasks including but not limited to reference test preparation and shipping.

Essential Job Functions

  • Technical responsibilities require this position to perform laboratory test procedures in one or more functional sections of the laboratory as assigned including moderate complexity testing. This includes accurate identification and pre-analytic preparation of specimens, complete testing according to established SOPs and accurately reports the test results. Technical knowledge must be utilized to complete testing to its highest level of efficiency. Completes all required quality control and maintenance.
  • Protects patient safety by following all protocols established for the accurate identification and labeling of laboratory specimens.
  • Assists Medical Technologists with non-testing tasks including but not limited to reference test preparation and shipping.
  • Maintains all standards established by the laboratory regulatory agencies and assists in the preparation and documentation necessary for successful compliance.
  • Competent in using necessary computer software. Answers inbound phone calls and maintains knowledge base to respond to caller’s needs, questions, or concerns. Works collaboratively with all other departments to provide high quality patient care. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Must be able to recognize when specimen integrity has been compromised.
  • Responsible to safely access, transport, and handle sharps, such as needles, suture kits, lancets, syringes, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • Minimum Associate of Science Degree or higher from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical science or a certified military training program meeting CLIA requirements for moderate complexity testing procedures
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience in Healthcare or Laboratory setting.

License, Certification & Clearances

  • Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system

Work Environment

  • Noise level is multiple people speaking at once.
  • Office Setting with phone calls.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
  • Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
