General Purpose


Medical Director of Trauma /Critical Care Services works with the Chief Medical Officer of University of Michigan Health - Sparrow to provide medical leadership for trauma and critical care services including quality improvement and problem-solving for clinical concerns, assuring that the professional services provided in the intensive care, critical care, neuro intensive care, trauma, meet patient needs in a timely, efficient and high quality manner. Medical Director of Trauma/ Critical Care Services shall work closely to identify and resolve medical matters with members of the Medical ICU, CVICU, NICU, Trauma Team and the medical staff. Clinically, the Medical Director of Trauma/Critical Care Services is responsible for the system and infrastructure to provide direct care of injured adult trauma patients. This includes the ED resuscitation bay, ICU, OR, floor, and clinic. This clinical responsibility also includes oversight and review of all Trauma patients admitted to theservice/hospital and their attendant medical issues. Position will be 50% administrative and 50% clinical


Essential Duties



  • Communicates trauma and critical care service goals and objectives and works to develop consensus among primary care physicians and specialists in support of the program goals.



  • Work collaboratively with Nursing, Quality and Medical Staff to develop, review and approve policies and procedures that apply specifically to adult critical care in conjunction with the Critical Care Committee.



  • Assists in the development of a database and methodology for monitoring referral patterns of physicians to the trauma and critical care units.



  • Reviews and recommends the acquisition of new and replacement equipment, technology and facility modifications in a cost-effective way.



  • Provides input and leadership into cost containment initiatives for trauma and critical care services.



  • Chairs the Critical Care Committee.



  • Provides leadership in the development of a collaborative relationship between medical and nursing staffs.



  • Assumes the responsibility for continuous quality and performance improvement and develops indicators to measure the quality, appropriateness and the cost effectiveness of care and compares results to national benchmarks.



  • Assumes responsibility to resolve issues and problems and issues related to clinical practices.



  • Makes decisions, in consolation with the physician responsible for the patient, for the triage and movement of patients through the adult critical care units and trauma units.



  • Work collaboratively with Nursing, Quality and Medical Staff to develop multi-disciplinary evidence based quality patient care.



  • Responsible for the oversight and education of the trainees (residents, medical students, fellows) rotating on the trauma and critical care services



  • From an administrative perspective, responsible for oversight of the clinical activities for each Trauma Attending Surgeon, Critical Care Attending Physician caring for Trauma and Critical Care patients.



  • Works with nursing leadership and hospital CMO in establishing ways to measure, communicate, and improve patient satisfaction.



  • Works with the CMO in establishing ways to measure, communicate, and improve physician satisfaction.



  • Coordinates medical staff activities relating to all inspections and accreditations



  • .Assures that the risk management and safety of patient care services are monitored and evaluated on a regular basis and appropriate actions are taken based on the findings.



  • Performs other medical director activities as requested by the Hospital Chief Medical Officer.



  • Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of University of Michigan Health-Sparrow System's Customer Service Behavior Standards of Performance by Respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve



  • Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Procedures



  • Follows established HIPAA Privacy Procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information



  • Maintains and protects patients' rights under the HIPAA Privacy Standards

General RequirementsBoard Certified in adult critical care or pulmonary and critical care medicine or trauma surgery
Work ExperienceFive years clinical experience critical care/and or trauma Previous experience as a Medical Director of Adult Critical Care or Trauma Services
EducationMD or DO
Specialized Knowledge and SkillsMust meet eligibility requirements for membership on University of Michigan Health - Sparrow Medical Staff Experience in information systems and applications to physician practices Ability to work with physician groups to develop consensus opinion and action plans
