Job summary

Veloxis Pharmaceuticals, an Asahi‑Kasei Group company, seeks a Medical Director to lead the infectious diseases medical strategy with an initial focus on refractory herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in immunocompromised patients.

The role is a core member of the Medical Affairs leadership team and partners closely with research, development, and corporate functions to advance the company’s therapeutic portfolio.

Qualifications

• MD or DO with Infectious Diseases specialization strongly preferred.
• 8 years’ experience in pharma/biotech, or 5+ years clinical/academic with industry collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and execution of the annual medical strategic plan with Medical Affairs leadership.
• Contribute to medical evidence-generation strategy (RWE, IIS, collaborative studies).
• Provide medical input into clinical development plans, TPPs, and lifecycle strategies.
• Build and maintain relationships with KOLs, academic experts, providers, patient groups, and payers to inform strategy.
• Act as internal medical advisor to cross-functional teams and committees.
• Support medical grant programs, HEOR, and market access efforts as appropriate.
• Collaborate with Medical Communications to ensure high-quality scientific communications.
• Monitor healthcare trends and ensure compliance and ethics in medical activities.

Overview

Veloxis Pharmaceuticals, an Asahi‑Kasei Group company, seeks a Medical Director to lead the infectious diseases medical strategy with an initial focus on refractory herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in immunocompromised patients. The role is a core member of the Medical Affairs leadership team and partners closely with research, development, and corporate functions to advance the company’s therapeutic portfolio.

Compensation and Benefits

• Base compensation range: $240,000 – $250,000 per year.

Core Responsibilities

• Lead the development and execution of the annual medical strategic plan with Medical Affairs leadership, aligning with Research and Development and Corporate objectives.
• Contribute to the medical evidence‑generation strategy, including real‑world evidence (RWE), investigator‑sponsored studies (IIS), and collaborative research to address key evidence gaps.
• Provide medical input into clinical development plans, target product profiles, and lifecycle management strategies across pipeline and marketed products.
• Build and maintain trusted partnerships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), academic experts, healthcare providers, patient advocacy groups, and payer decision‑makers to inform strategy and elevate Veloxis’ leadership in infectious diseases.
• Serve as an internal medical advisor and point of contact for cross‑functional teams and committees across the organization.
• Contribute to business development, corporate venture capital, and open innovation efforts, including scientific due diligence, asset evaluation, and integration of medical insights into opportunity assessments.
• Support publication strategy development in partnership with cross‑functional colleagues.
• Ensure timely execution of data dissemination plans that meet scientific, regulatory, and organizational needs.
• Collaborate with Medical Communications to ensure consistent and high‑quality scientific communications across congresses, symposia, digital channels, and educational initiatives.
• Contribute to content review committees and provide medical accuracy and scientific review of promotional and non‑promotional materials.
• Support pipeline planning and early‑phase development by providing medical input on target product profiles, data interpretation, and clinical differentiation.
• Lead advisory boards and diverse insight‑gathering activities.
• Contribute to the medical grant program, including establishing key objectives and participating in review.
• Partner with HEOR and Market Access to support value‑based evidence generation and to provide direct medical payer engagement, as appropriate.
• Collaborate closely with Field Medical teams to ensure strategic alignment, integration of insights into planning, and support continuous training and content development for scientific readiness and excellence in external engagement throughout launch and product lifecycles.
• Participate in national and regional conferences, meetings, consortia, and other scientific forums to support Medical Affairs strategic objectives.
• Provide coaching and leadership to junior team members and direct reports, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous development.
• Contribute to the development of SOPs, best practices, and functional standards to ensure medical activities are executed efficiently, ethically, and compliantly.
• Support audit readiness and quality improvement initiatives.
• Actively monitor the changing healthcare landscape to identify emerging global scientific, clinical, and health policy trends.

Qualifications and Skills

• M.D. or D.O. with specialization in Infectious Diseases strongly preferred.
• Alternative doctoral degree in health sciences (e.g., PharmD, Ph.D.) with demonstrated expertise in antiviral therapeutics and significant clinical practice experience.
• Minimum 8 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, or a combination of 5+ years of strong clinical/academic experience with demonstrated industry collaboration.
• Infectious disease therapeutic area experience required; expertise in antiviral therapy, HSV, transplant infectious diseases, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, or other immunocompromised patient populations highly relevant.
• Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and work cross‑functionally in a matrixed environment.
• Strong statistical knowledge and ability to interpret study findings and communicate results effectively.
• Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
• Innovative thinker, strategic leader, valued collaborator, and hands‑on tactical performer with a successful track record and strong drive to succeed.
• Strong sense of ethics, compliance, and integrity.
• Ability to travel up to 30%, including international and weekend travel.
