Qualifications

  • Active Wisconsin medical license (or ability to obtain)
  • DEA registration and Medicaid credentialing
  • Maintenance of Certification (MOC)

Job description

The Medical Director provides clinical leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for a nonprofit, grant-funded, faith based, multi-site free clinic serving uninsured and underserved populations. This role ensures delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, and culturally responsive care across integrated service lines including primary care, specialty care, pharmacy, behavioral health, dental, and care coordination. The Medical Director partners closely with the Executive Director to advance the organization’s mission, supporting a volunteer-driven care model, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring responsible stewardship of grant-funded resources. This position balances administrative leadership with direct patient care and teaching responsibilities.

1. Clinical Leadership, Education, & Care Delivery
  • Establish and oversee clinical standards, protocols, and care models across all service lines in a free clinic setting
  • Provide direct patient care and clinical supervision of staff and volunteer providers
  • Ensure safe, effective, and timely management of care, including follow-up of high-risk results
  • Promote evidence-based, resource-conscious care tailored to uninsured populations
  • Serve as the clinical teacher, mentor, and coordinator to students, interns, and other learners
2. Strategy, Community Engagement & Partnerships
  • Lead development of clinical strategies aligned with organizational mission and community health needs
  • Build and sustain partnerships with health systems, academic institutions, and community organizations
  • Represent the organization in community forums, coalitions, and advocacy efforts for the uninsured
  • Support program growth and innovation to address gaps in care
  • Maintain and strengthen academic and teaching partnerships
3. Quality, Compliance & Program Oversight
  • Co-lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives
  • Monitor clinical outcomes, patient experience, and program effectiveness
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, ethical, and clinical standards, including grant requirements
  • Promote data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement
  • Oversee clinical operations across programs (primary care, specialty, pharmacy, dental, etc.) and ensure integrated, coordinated care
  • Recruit, develop, and retain mission-aligned clinical staff and engage volunteer providers
  • Provide performance management, coaching, and professional development
  • Foster a culture of compassion, equity, collaboration, and clinical excellence
  • Ensure culturally competent, trauma-informed care delivery
  • Support a strong teaching and volunteer engagement environment
  • Partner with executive leadership and the Board on fundraising, clinical strategy, policy, and reporting
  • Contribute to budget development and ensure responsible stewardship of limited resources
  • Support grant development, reporting, and compliance through clinical expertise and data
  • Align programs with funding priorities and sustainability goals
  • Maintain relationships with grantors, donors, and institutional partners
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
  • MD or DO; Board Certified in Internal Medicine

Experience
  • Minimum 3+ years of clinical practice experience (outpatient preferred)
  • Experience working with underserved or vulnerable populations required
  • Prior leadership experience in a nonprofit, free clinic, FQHC, or safety-net setting strongly preferred
  • Experience with volunteer-based or teaching programs preferred
