Job summary

First Databank (FDB) is hiring for a Medical Device Content Coder in Carmel, IN. You will research and assign HCPCS codes, maintain the HCPCS library, and ensure accuracy through audits. The role involves training staff and updating codes as CMS guidance changes.

First Databank (FDB) is currently seeking a Medical Device in the Quality department. This position is responsible for researching data published from the FDA, device manufacturers, and other credible sources to generate unbiased, robust medical device content for our device solution with an emphasis on HCPCS coding for medical devices.

This position is based out of our Carmel office and follows a hybrid work model, with an expectation to work onsite at least three days per week.

Responsibilities
  • Research pertinent information from various sources such as manufacturers and CMS to assign the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes to medical device content.
  • Update and maintain our HCPCS library through detailed research.
  • Use research to develop and maintain HCPCS mapping and wizard.
  • Provide training to staff members.
  • Ensure accuracy of codes applied to devices using data audits, validations and reviews.
  • Update HCPCS codes as changes are made to GMDN and/or UNSPSC categories.
  • Evaluate current categorization schema and provide feedback and training to categorization staff.
  • Evaluate medical device content to ensure the accuracy of HCPCS mappings.
  • Follow up with manufacturers when code assignments are not straightforward or data is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes.
  • Ensure updates from CMS are applied to data in a timely manner using maintenance tools.
  • Ensure accuracy of codes and codes are current and active.
  • Search for information in cases where the coding is complex or unusual.
  • Abide by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and adhere to official coding guidelines.
  • Keep abreast of and comply with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements.
Required Skills
  • Ability to research devices, categories, and HCPCS codes leading to the development of a library.
  • Expertise in oral and written communications – ability to clarify and discuss coding issues with peers.
  • Able to multi‑task and prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to use web‑based and computer applications and work with peers in team situations.

  • Ability to use approved AI tools, including ChatGPT Projects and Custom GPTs, to support medical device coding research, HCPCS data analysis, content validation, audit review, and workflow efficiency.
  • Skilled in developing structured prompts and reusable AI‑assisted workflows to compare source data, identify inconsistencies, summarize research findings, and support coding‑related decision making.
  • Demonstrates responsible use of AI by validating all AI‑generated outputs against credible sources, official coding guidance, internal standards, and professional judgment.
  • Maintains compliance with data privacy, company security policies, ethical coding standards, and appropriate human oversight when using AI tools.
Required Experience
  • Two years of coding experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Previous experience in supply chain management or medical device industry preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.

Please note this information is specific to those hired in location. If this role is open to candidates outside of location, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non‑discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
