Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Professional Coder with a cardiology focus to review provider records, assign CPT/ICD-10-CM codes, and ensure documentation supports billed services.

You will handle non-invasive cardiology procedures (stress tests, echocardiography) and work with payers to resolve denials while staying current with coding guidelines. This remote role offers telecommuting within the U.S. and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent with professional coder certification.
• 2+ years of ICD-10 and CPT coding experience focused on cardiology.
• Strong knowledge of CPT/ICD-10-CM/HCPCS and modifiers.
• Ability to interpret medical records and apply guidelines accurately.
• Proficiency with EHRs and coding software.

Responsibilities

• Review provider documentation and medical records to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Abstract and code professional fee services for non-invasive cardiology procedures (stress tests, echocardiography).
• Apply CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifiers according to guidelines and payer requirements.
• Ensure documentation supports the procedures billed.
• Identify deficiencies and obtain clarification from providers as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Review provider documentation and medical records to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes
• Abstract and code professional fee services for non-invasive cardiology procedures, including but not limited to:
  • Stress testing (exercise and pharmacologic)
  • Stress echocardiography
  • Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE)
  • Transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE)
• Apply correct CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifier assignments according to coding guidelines and payer requirements
• Ensure documentation supports the procedures billed
• Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate with providers to obtain clarification when necessary
• Work coding edits, claim denials, and audit findings to support accurate reimbursement
• Maintain productivity and quality standards established by the organization
• Stay current with coding regulations, payer updates, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and cardiology coding guidelines

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifier usage
• Thorough understanding of professional fee coding principles
• Knowledge of cardiology terminology, anatomy, physiology, and non-invasive diagnostic testing
• Ability to interpret complex medical documentation and apply coding guidelines accurately
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and coding software applications

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED
• Professional coder certification with credentialing from AHIMA and/or AAPC (CPC-A, RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-P, CCS) to be maintained annually
• 2+ years of experience with ICD-10 and CPT coding with a focus in cardiology services
• 2+ years of experience with PCs in a Windows environment, including MS Excel and EMR systems

Preferred Qualifications:

• 2+ years of experience with non-invasive cardiology procedures
• 2+ years of post-certification medical coding experience
• 2+ years of Outpatient Physician coding (Pro-Fee) experience
• Experience with EMR systems (Epic or Cerner)

Soft Skills:

• Maintain coding accuracy rate of 95% or greater
• Meet established productivity standards
• Demonstrate compliance with all regulatory and organizational coding requirements

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $20 - $36 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
