Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Professional Cardiovascular Coder to review provider documentation and assign CPT/ICD-10-CM/HCPCS codes for non-invasive cardiology services, ensuring accurate reimbursement and compliant billing.

The role requires detailed knowledge of coding guidelines, strong communication with providers, and the ability to stay current with regulations and payer updates while maintaining productivity and quality in a busy EHR environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Professional coder certification with AHIMA and/or AAPC (CPC-A, RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-P, CCS) maintained annually.
  • 2+ years of ICD-10 and CPT coding experience with a focus in cardiology.
  • 2+ years using Windows and MS Excel; experience with EMR systems.

Responsibilities

  • Review provider documentation and medical records to assign diagnosis and procedure codes.
  • Abstract and code professional fee services for non-invasive cardiology procedures (stress testing, echo, TTE, TEE).
  • Apply CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifiers per guidelines and payer rules.
  • Ensure documentation supports the billed procedures.
  • Identify documentation gaps and obtain clarifications from providers.
  • Work coding edits, deny reasons, and audit findings to support proper reimbursement.
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards; stay current with coding updates.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review provider documentation and medical records to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes
  • Abstract and code professional fee services for non-invasive cardiology procedures, including but not limited to:
    • Stress testing (exercise and pharmacologic)
    • Stress echocardiography
    • Transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE)
    • Transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE)
  • Apply correct CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifier assignments according to coding guidelines and payer requirements
  • Ensure documentation supports the procedures billed
  • Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate with providers to obtain clarification when necessary
  • Work coding edits, claim denials, and audit findings to support accurate reimbursement
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards established by the organization
  • Stay current with coding regulations, payer updates, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and cardiology coding guidelines
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifier usage
  • Thorough understanding of professional fee coding principles
  • Knowledge of cardiology terminology, anatomy, physiology, and non-invasive diagnostic testing
  • Ability to interpret complex medical documentation and apply coding guidelines accurately
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and coding software applications

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Professional coder certification with credentialing from AHIMA and/or AAPC (CPC-A, RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-P, CCS) to be maintained annually
  • 2+ years of experience with ICD-10 and CPT coding with a focus in cardiology services
  • 2+ years of experience with PCs in a Windows environment, including MS Excel and EMR systems
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of experience with non-invasive cardiology procedures
  • 2+ years of post-certification medical coding experience
  • 2+ years of Outpatient Physician coding (Pro-Fee) experience
  • Experience with EMR systems (Epic or Cerner)
Soft Skills:
  • Maintain coding accuracy rate of 95% or greater
  • Meet established productivity standards
  • Demonstrate compliance with all regulatory and organizational coding requirements

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $20 - $36 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
