Overview
In collaboration with patients, families (as defined by the patient), and staff across all disciplines and departments, the Medical Assistant is responsible for performing selected clinical duties, including administrative/clerical tasks, basic patient care, and administrative functions related to patient intake.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties:
- Accurately interview patients, record patient history, and measure vital signs such as height, weight, BMI, head circumference, current medications, pulse oximetry level, and patient comfort level.
- Verify patient information including demographics, insurance, vitals, and medications; complete the intake process by verifying and entering patient data into EHR/EPM.
- Greet and assist patients courteously and professionally, answer telephones, provide information, and verify patient details as needed.
- Collect, perform, document, and report results of CLIA-waived lab tests, such as urine dip, pregnancy tests, blood glucose levels, fecal occult blood tests, rapid influenza, and strep tests.
- Collect, prepare, and document specimen collection, including blood, urine, stool, and sputum.
- Perform clinical duties assigned, including preparing patients for examinations or treatments, assisting providers with exams or procedures, setting up exam rooms, and sterilizing instruments.
- Complete pre-visit planning to support clinical appointments.
- Administer medications according to the CUC formulary.
- Perform medical acts as prescribed by Standing Delegation Orders.
- Dismiss patients at the end of visits, completing orders, tasks, and patient plans in the system.
- Participate in new employee orientation and attend mandatory meetings.
- Collaborate with staff, patients, and providers to communicate and coordinate patient care effectively.
- Coordinate and manage patient care, including communicating test results, assisting with pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling.
- Follow up on diagnostic tests to ensure completion and documentation in the EHR.
- Perform surveillance programs, maintaining complete medical records, including labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records, and previous care documentation.
- Maintain a clean and functional environment by cleaning and disinfecting equipment and exam rooms as per guidelines.
- As assigned, serve as a scribe, accurately documenting medical visits and procedures, including patient history, exams, treatments, education, provider diagnoses, prescriptions, and instructions, and prepare referral letters.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Medical Assistant Diploma and/or National Medical Assistant Certification or equivalent military healthcare experience.
Minimum Experience:
- Completion of a medical assistant externship (required).
Certifications/Licensure:
- Current CPR certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, maintained during employment.
