Job Title: Medical Assistant

Job Summary: Assists providers and manages clinical functions in the Urgent Care department.

Position Summary: Performs patient care under the direction and supervision of the physician or Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in an ambulatory care setting.

Essential Functions:

  1. Accountable to the Assistant Nurse Manager, Nursing Operations Manager, or Practice Manager for operational issues.
  2. Supports and demonstrates effective and professional communication with patients and family members.
  3. Works collaboratively with the administrative and operations staff.
  4. Gathers patient data through interview and observation.
  5. Assists patients and families with preparation for examination.
  6. Assists the physician or APP during examination and procedures.
  7. Demonstrates competency in specific tasks and skills as defined by the practice.
  8. Documents treatments, procedures, and patient education according to Orlando Health and department specific policies.
  9. Acts as a liaison on behalf of the patient to schedule specialty testing and/or specialty physician consultation.
  10. Processes incoming and outgoing calls in an independent and professional manner using sound clinical judgment.
  11. Enters medication, laboratory, and diagnostic imaging orders into the electronic medical system under the direction of a provider.
  12. Adheres to and assures compliance with Orlando Health and department specific policies, procedures, value statements, and Commitment to Excellent standards.
  13. Consistently demonstrates personal and patient safety practices and adherence to infection control standards outlined in Orlando Health policies.
  14. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
  15. Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions:

  1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and the ability to assess data appropriate to the age-specific needs of the patients.
  2. Participates in Quality Assurance and Quality Indicator activities as assigned.
  3. Demonstrates awareness of medical/legal issues, patient rights, and compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  4. Practices the efficient use of supplies.
  5. Assists the business office as needed with reception, scheduling, and discharge of patients.

Education/Training:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Successful completion of Medical Assistant training from an approved technical school (or verifiable applicable work experience in a patient care setting) required.

Licensure/Certification:

  1. Maintains current American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Certification.
  2. If hired after January 1, 2015, maintains current certification by one of the following agencies within 6 months of hire:
  3. Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by National Health Career Association (NHA).
  4. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
  5. Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) by the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).
  6. National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  7. Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) or Nationally Registered Certified Advanced Medical Assistant (NRCAMA) by the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP).
  8. Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  9. Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by the American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA).
