Job summary

The Medical Assistant at Children's Hospital Colorado provides clinical support to patients and assists care providers with clinical and administrative tasks at the Uptown Outpatient Specialty Clinics and Outpatient Laboratory Services in Denver.

This 36-hour-per-week role offers benefits, requires graduation from an accredited MA program with BLS/CPR, pediatric and phlebotomy experience preferred, and includes a four 9-hour shifts Monday–Friday with occasional Saturday in Pulmonary/Cardiology

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED.
• Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• One year of direct health care experience may substitute for MA program.
• Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patients for visits and assists with examination procedures.
• Provides general office support including phone and fax management.
• Serves as preceptor for new staff and monitors progress.
• Maintains safe and confidential clinical environment and records.
• Verifies patient information and collects vital signs as needed.
• Assists with examinations, lab specimens, basic testing and medication administration.
• Balances workloads and coordinates patient flow with providers.

Job Overview

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides clinical support to patients and assists care providers with clinical and administrative support.

• Location
  Uptown Outpatient Specialty Clinics and Outpatient Laboratory Services
  May be asked to provide coverage to North or Wheatridge locations
• Position Status
  36 hours per week; eligible for benefits
• Shift
  Four 9-hour shifts, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
  Occasional 1/2 day Saturday shift is required in Pulmonary/Cardiology at North Campus (est. 2 times per calendar year)
• Salary Information
  Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
  Hourly Range: $19.18 to $28.77

Duties & Responsibilities

• Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the examining room; providing examination gowns and drapes; arranging examining room instruments, supplies, and equipment. Conducts quality checks.
• Provides general office support including phone and fax management.
• Serves as the preceptor for new staff, including orientation, education, skill validation, tracking, assessment and monitoring progress.
• Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
• Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping patient care information confidential.
• Adheres to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and The Joint Commission standards.
• Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and/or recording medical history; taking vital signs; confirming purpose of visit or treatment. Reports areas of concern to next care provider.
• Supports patient care delivery by assisting health care providers during examinations; preparing laboratory specimens; performing basic testing; disposing of contaminated supplies; cleaning or preparing for sterilization of medical instruments; administering medications per policy and procedures; telephoning prescriptions to pharmacies and other duties within scope.
• Assists in balancing workloads, coordinates and maintains clinic flow by coordinating with providers, and monitoring patient flow.
• Provides phlebotomy.
• Completes lab test follow up and medical record documentation.
• Prepares and completes medical record for visit by recording patient information, treatment, and test results. Assists with patient "MyChart" enrollment.
• Participates in the standardized education of patients through written instructions and answering questions as directed by provider.
• Independently initiates referrals and insurance pre-authorizations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Degrees
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant Program.
• Experience
  • Pediatric and phlebotomy experience preferred
• Equivalency
  • One year of experience in a direct health care role may substitute for graduation from a Medical Assistant program.
• Licenses & Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
