Job summary

The Hughston Clinic is seeking a medical assistant to support physicians in a dynamic clinical setting. You will help with patient care, document encounters in the EMR, and assist with procedures and post-operative follow-up within a fast-paced orthopaedic environment.

Responsibilities include transcription, test entry, chart maintenance, specimen handling, and coordinating with outside facilities. A CMA certification is preferred; a valid driver’s license and HIPAA/BLS knowledge are required.

Qualifications

  • One year of relevant healthcare experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable MVR and insurance.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements and BLS.
  • Knowledge of AthenaNet and medical terminology.
  • May require irregular work hours.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians with patient care activities in clinic.
  • Transcribe patient history and exams in the EMR as directed.
  • Enter tests and procedures accurately; review charts.
  • Ensure tests are performed accurately and timely.
  • Document patient information in EMR per dictation.
  • Maintain EMR and chart completeness.
  • Escort patients to triage and assist with mobility.
  • Monitor schedules and patient flow for efficiency.
  • Support post-operative follow-ups and patient communications.
  • Assist with DME device placement and education.
  • Sterilize equipment and stock exam rooms.
  • Follow HIPAA guidelines in all interactions.
  • Handle administrative duties including scheduling and insurance forms.

Job description

Position Goal

Assist Physician(s) in Clinic with patient care activities. Complete administrative duties as required.

  • Familiarity with what the physician requires for a productive clinic.
  • Accompany provider into the patient examination room to transcribe patient history and exams to accurately, documenting the providers’ encounter with patients and others present (if applicable).
  • Accurately enter test and procedures as ordered by provider and review charts.
  • Ensure all tests ordered are performed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Accurately document patient information in EMR chart per physician dictation.
  • Review and maintain charts to ensure completeness/EMR guidelines w/reviewing clinicals.
  • Escort patients from waiting area to triage area, ranging from those patients with full mobility to limited mobility.
  • Constant monitoring of schedules and patient flow during clinic to ensure maximum efficiency/organization.
  • Review initial vital signs evaluation to include any lab specimens.
  • Remove staples, sutures, and assist with minor surgical procedures as needed.
  • Assist with placement, removal, and instruction of DME devices such as splints, casting, immobilizers, braces, and bandages.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment using approved techniques.
  • Clean and stock exam rooms and change sheets on exam tables after each patient.
  • Communicate restrictions and instructions to patients.
  • Follow up calls to patients after surgery or other invasive procedures to document their progress.
  • Communication with outside facilities for scheduling tests or surgery to include having any necessary orders, pre-cert, or referral information ready.
  • Completion of insurance, disability, and FMLA forms in a timely manner.
  • Assist in administrative duties as required, to include but not limited to collection of past due balances when scheduling surgery, check in/check out; scheduling appointments, procedures, and pre-cert procedures, insurance verification, data entry, posting charges, and assisting secretaries.

Experience

Required:

  • One (1) year as relevant healthcare experience.
Education

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
Required

Special Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License, satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR) and proof of insurance required for position on-boarding.
  • Annual MVR may be required per policy and procedure; background reports may be ran as needed throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be able to work independently and have working knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
  • Maintain BLS certification.
  • Knowledge of the AthenaNet and medical specialty/terminology.
  • This position may require irregular work hours.
