Job summary

UCFS Healthcare seeks a Medical Assistant - Psychiatry to support psychiatric and primary care teams, preparing patients for examinations, collecting vital signs, and documenting care information. The role includes maintaining infection control standards and assisting with administrative tasks as needed.

Responsibilities include coordinating referrals, supporting the care team, and traveling to UCFS sites for coverage.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience in clinical psychiatric services is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examinations, escort to room, record assessments and vital signs; ensure exam rooms are clean and stocked.
  • Monitor patient medications intake as directed.
  • Maintain and inventory supplies and ensure equipment is properly serviced.
  • Record forms and flowsheets as needed by providers.
  • Coordinate patient appointments and referrals with providers, including psychiatry and primary care teams.

We are currently seeking a Medical Assistant - Psychiatry to support the psychiatric provider (and primary care providers as needed) with daily preparation of patients for examinations, perform assigned procedures, collect, and document patient care information (vital signs, height, weight, etc.). The Medical Assistant - Psychiatry will maintain their clinical areas based on infection control standards and patient flow expectations. As assigned, this role will process information needed for administrative functions. It is expected that the right candidate will sustain a line of communication with the psychiatric provider, primary care providers, and patients.

UCFS Hours of Operation: Open 8:00am - 7:00pm; Hours Vary By Day & Location

We are also open on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month

Expected Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours/week; Psychiatry (50%), Primary Care (50%)

Locations: Norwich (80%), Griswold (20%)

Outline of Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepares the patient for examination: escorts patient to the room; obtains and records assessment information; performs screening tests/procedures; prepares specimens for transport. Adheres to universal precautions and departmental policies and procedures
  • Monitors patient medication intake.
  • Ensures clean and stocked exam rooms; maintains inventory of supplies. Performs quality control/improvement activities as assigned; operates and maintains equipment per manufacture instructions.
  • Ensures that forms/flowsheets are recorded as may be needed by providers.
  • Demonstrates customer service in responding to patient needs. Contacts patients as instructed regarding missed appointments and test results.
  • Coordinates appointments with the provider, referrals to outside specialties (neurologist, sleep study, etc.), and medication referrals as ordered by the provider.
  • Coverage of the Primary Care team as Psychiatric needs are met

Requirements
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school diploma
  • Certified Medical Assistant
  • 1 year of experience in clinical psychiatric services highly preferred
Minimum Certificates, Licenses, Registration
  • Current CPR certification
  • Current MA or CNA certificate
Minimum Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills to handle varying situations and place patients at ease
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to travel to other UCFS sites in Colchester, Griswold, Norwich, New London, and Plainfield as needed for coverage
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems (EPIC preferred) with working knowledge of MS Office
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
