Middlesex Orthopedic & Spine Associates is seeking a per diem Medical Assistant to join our team in Middletown, CT. We are a growing practice with ample opportunity for career growth.
What You’ll Do:
Channel your expertise as a Medical Assistant and allow your keen attention to detail to shine in this important role. This position plays a key role in the efficient and effective clinical operations of the practice. Responsibilities/Duties:
- Arrive promptly to clinic according to your scheduled sessions. Contribute and work together as a team to ensure the clinic runs smoothly (rooming patients, completing DME/casts, cleaning exam & waiting rooms, stocking rooms).
- Verify patient information by interviewing patients, recording medical history, confirming and recording all patient medications and allergies, and confirming and documenting the purpose of the visit. Obtain OP reports, imaging reports, etc., for the visit. Open images for Provider review.
- Prepare patients for examination by ordering preliminary physical tests/x-rays. Interact with other departments (electronic health records, radiology, service coordination) to obtain resources needed for patient care.
- Maintain accurate notes and records. Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality.
- Remove sutures and staples (as appropriate).
- Prepare injectable medications as per physician orders. Assist Providers with US-guided procedures (portable and handheld devices).
- Assess wound condition prior to cast applications and removal. Consult with Providers for further orders when issues are identified. (As appropriate)
- Apply casts (including specialized casts, fracture braces) using plaster or synthetic materials. Adjust, remove, repair, bi-valve, wedge, and window casts. Provide on-the-job instruction and demonstrate casting techniques to co-workers and other health professionals as requested.
- Measure and fit patients for orthopedic braces, devices, and ambulatory aids. Instruct patients on care and proper use. Fabricate and apply splints and bandages (e.g., finger, humeral, knee splints, back braces). Document and bill for DME products appropriately.
- Instruct patients and families on cast, splint, or brace care and skin care. Reinforce medical information provided by the physician regarding injuries, treatment plans, and expected outcomes.
- Order and maintain equipment, including cleaning and preparing instruments for autoclave.
- Manage orthopedic supplies, stock rooms, and biohazard bins.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals such as physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
- Prepare for clinic by bringing necessary supplies. After clinic, clean and stock rooms, power down computers, and prepare for the next provider’s clinic.
- Assist and monitor other clinics when schedule allows, including rooming, assisting with patient kiosks, and completing DME/casts.
- Cover evening Urgent Ortho hours on a rotating basis.
- Travel to satellite offices as assigned.
- Chart, prepare, and review schedules to ensure reports and tests are available for providers.
- Assist with triage tasks.
- Train front desk staff on patient check-in and check-out procedures.
Qualifications
Who you are:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of office procedures and computer systems.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to handle a high-stress, busy environment.
- Knowledge of Word & Outlook required.
- Orthopedic and/or casting experience preferred.
- Professional and articulate phone skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Travel between satellite offices required.
Certified Medical Assistant (MA) preferred. Candidates trained and graduated from accredited programs (CAAHEP or ABHES), or with experience from CNA, EMT, internships, or scribes, are considered.
