Job summary

Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Inc. seeks a Medical Assistant to perform clinical and administrative tasks under licensed supervision. You will record vital signs and histories in the EHR, assist with exams, and support diagnostic tests in a pediatric setting.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited MA program or CMA/RMA certification within 90 days of hire, plus current BLS certification. Prior to 11/30/2021 hires have one year to obtain certification.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program accredited by CAAHEP, ABHES, or equivalent.
  • MA certification from AAMA or AMT in lieu of graduation acceptable.

  • Measure and record vital signs, histories, and growth in the EHR.
  • Communicate patient information to licensed providers.
  • Perform ECGs, PFTs, and other diagnostic tests within MA scope.

Job description

This role works under the direction of a licensed health care professional and performs various clinical and administrative tasks for the assigned area. The Medical Assistant is expected to carry out the mission, vision, and values of Phoenix Children's. A continuous exhibition of professionalism, strong ethical conduct, and integrity must be carried out at all times. Interdepartmental collaboration, high standards of work performance, keeping a positive attitude and adhering to the policies and procedures of Phoenix Children's is essential. This position requires current and continuous certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) or American Medical Technologists (RMA) in the field of Medical Assisting or the ability to acquire within 90 days of hire. Anyone hired prior to 11/30/2021 has one year from their date of hire to obtain their required Medical Assistant Certification.

Position Duties
  • Measures and records vital signs, growth parameters, medical histories, and signs and symptoms into the electronic health record
  • Communicates patient related information to the licensed health care provider
  • Performs electrocardiograms, pulmonary function tests, and other diagnostic testing within the Medical Assisting scope
  • Collects laboratory specimens (including blood specimens)
  • Performs point of care testing
  • Prepares and administers medication at the direction of a licensed health care provider and adheres to all regulations, guidelines, and policies for medication labeling, security and storage, inventory management and disposal.
  • Performs routine screening tests
  • Assists the provider with exams and procedures
  • Removes sutures, changes dressings, applies bandages and other first aid procedures
  • Prepares and instructs patients about examinations, diagnostic tests, medications, special diets, and health maintenance
  • Disposes of bio-hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA safety standards and hospital policies
  • Demonstrates infection control standards related to hand washing and standard precautions including ensuring that all equipment in exam room is cleaned according to hospital policies
  • Follows Phoenix Children’s and OSHA safety rules and procedures at all times
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations
  • Processes and communicates prescription refills to pharmacies as authorized by a licensed health care provider in accordance with regulations, policies and approved departmental protocols.
  • Obtains prior authorizations for medication
  • Obtains prior authorizations for DME
  • Screens telephone calls and takes accurate clinical messages within the Medical Assisting scope of practice as well as in accordance with Phoenix Children’s policies
  • Returns patient calls with provider directed instructions
  • Assists patients and providers in completing documentation and any other paperwork in which a provider is required to disclose and/or attest to
  • Utilizes medication reconciliation tools within EHR.
  • Cleans and restocks exam rooms
  • In some clinics, may serve as a witness to cycle counting and wasting of controlled substances
  • Follows appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct
  • Remains up to date with certifications, company mandated training and professional development.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as requested.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program accredited by one of the following: CAAHEP, ABHES, or other school approved by the Department of Education. MA certification from American Association of Medical Assistants or American Medical Technologists in lieu of graduation from an accredited course.

Experience

  • One year of experience in a health care or pediatric setting.

Additional Requirements

  • Medical Assistant Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) or American Medical Technologists (RMA) required within 90 days of employment to remain in position. Anyone hired prior to 11/30/2021 has one year from their date of hire to obtain their required Medical Assistant Certification.
  • Current BLS certification for Health Care Professionals from the American Heart Association.
