Medical Assistant (Part Time, Orthopaedic Surgery)

University of Pittsburgh Physicians Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is hiring a part-time Medical Assistant to join their team. This position will be located at UPMC Washington Hospital and will work Monday through Friday during daylight hours. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for rooming patients, utilizing the EPIC system, post-op care, assisting with procedures, casting and cast removal, and other operational duties.

Responsibilities:

1. Check schedules and organize patient flow. Accompany patients to exam/procedure rooms. Assist patients with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparing for exams. Collect patient information/history, take vitals, perform screenings per provider guidelines, and relay instructions to patients and families.
2. Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
3. Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment, clean rooms and instruments between visits, and manage inventory of supplies.
4. Comply with regulatory requirements (OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain confidentiality and adhere to UPMC policies.
5. Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs. Assist physicians with procedures and document patient information.
6. Answer calls, provide patient education, obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, and complete forms. Schedule appointments, verify insurance, and manage charts.
7. Under supervision of a physician, administer injectable medications and vaccines as appropriate.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, basic computer skills, and knowledge of medical terminology and clinical responsibilities.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

• CPR certification (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR.
• Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (with renewal), Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal).
