Job description

Position Summary

Responsible for general medical assistant functions such as history and physical (H&P) documentation, communicating with physicians and staff, and maintaining clean exam rooms. Handles physician messages and routine clinical support tasks.

Responsibilities

General tasks and standards include attending meetings, exercising sound judgment on questionable findings, collaborating positively with staff, adapting to changing situations, attending in‑service programs, understanding company policies, ensuring safety protocols, and identifying unsafe conditions.

Specific Duties
  • Complete EMR intake at the time of service.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms.
  • Review H&P for new patients or new problems before physician examination.
  • Provide medical assistance (casting, sutures, injections, prescription recording).
  • Give patients instructions regarding casts.
  • Assist with physical therapy requests, off‑work requests, and school notes.
  • Assign coding procedures performed and diagnoses as directed by physician; document on encounter form.
  • Verify encounter form completeness and coding accuracy.
  • Receive and reply to medical‑related messages and prescription requests; record in patient chart.
  • Maintain communication with physicians and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations for biohazardous disposal.
  • Order medical supplies as needed.
  • Assist with medical record filing when necessary.
  • Dispose of expired medications.
  • Facilitate scheduling of outpatient testing and pre‑certification for MRI, CT, bone scan, Dexa scan, and other required tests.
  • Keep exam rooms and clinic work areas clean and tidy for the next scheduled clinic.
Additional Duties
  • Saturday on‑call if necessary.
  • Travel to satellite offices as required.
Other Duties
  • Obtain and review MRIs and X‑ray results for physician evaluation; may require travel and coordination with local radiologists.
  • Contact ancillary services to coordinate follow‑up care and promote communication among all parties.
  • Develop streamlined processes for patient messaging after physician review.
Physical Requirements

Must frequently hear and communicate orally; see both close and distant; read, comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, manipulate, and/or feel objects; climb, pull, push, and kneel; maximum unassisted lift of 50 lbs (average lift 25‑50 lbs).

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a certified medical assistant program (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2‑3 years of clinical experience; orthopedic or surgical specialty experience a plus.
  • Proficient in EMR systems and basic computer applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced environment with attention to detail.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with orthopedic‑specific EMR systems (e.g., Athenahealth, NextGen, Epic).
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, procedures, and durable medical equipment.
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, etc.) is a plus.
