Medical Assistant / Medical Administrative Clerk

Overview

In collaboration with patients, families (as defined by the patient), and staff across all disciplines and departments, the Medical Assistant / Medical Administrative Clerk is responsible for performing selected clinical duties, including administrative/clerical tasks and basic patient care.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties
  1. Interview patients, record patient history, and measure vital signs such as height, weight, BMI, head circumference, current medications, pulse oximetry level, and patient comfort level.
  2. Verify patient information (demographics, insurance, vitals, medications), complete the intake process, and enter data into EHR/EP systems.
  3. Perform front office duties: greet and assist patients courteously, answer calls, verify patient information, etc.
  4. Collect, perform, document, and report results of CLIA-waived lab tests (urine dip, pregnancy tests, blood glucose, fecal occult blood, rapid influenza, rapid strep).
  5. Collect, prepare, and document specimen collection (blood, urine, stool, sputum).
  6. Assist with clinical duties such as preparing patients for exams, assisting providers, setting up rooms, and sterilizing instruments.
  7. Prepare charts according to the provider’s schedule.
  8. Administer medications as per MA formulary.
  9. Dismiss patients at the end of visits.
  10. Participate in orientation and mandatory meetings.
  11. Work as part of a team, communicating effectively with staff, patients, and providers.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Primary Accountabilities
  1. Ensure all patient care and administrative documentation is current and complete.
  2. Attend daily huddles, meetings, patient conferences, and planning sessions.
  3. Maintain licensure and certifications through continuing education.
  4. Participate in quality assurance initiatives and ensure compliance with standards (e.g., The Joint Commission).
  5. Interact respectfully with patients and families to foster positive relationships.
  6. Collaborate with the care team to provide patient-centered care.
Essential Functions & Key Competencies
  • Excellent relationship-building and customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform assigned medical tasks accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in computer data entry and retrieval.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in an administrative role.
  • Certificate from a Medical Assistant Program or equivalent military healthcare experience.
  • Current CPR certification from American Heart Association or Red Cross, maintained throughout employment.
