Upstate Family Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Care Center (FQHC) located in the heart of the Mohawk Valley in Utica, NY, is seeking passionate and dedicated Medical Assistants to join our team. Clinic is open Monday - Friday 8:00am-6:00pm.
Schedule: Monday - Friday
The Medical Assistant is responsible to provide health services using a team-based care model to individuals, through effective partnerships with patients, their caregivers/families, community resources, and their primary care physician. Facilitates a “shared goal model” within and across settings to achieve coordinated, high-quality care that is patient and family centered.
Essential Roles and ResponsibilitiesActivities include but are not limited to the following:
Rooms patient, verifying all demographics, obtaining appropriate signatures and copays.
Welcome’s patient to our practice
Explaining procedure when office is closed or patient needs to be seen at Hospital/ER/Urgent Care providing patient with UFHC’s ID card and why it is important to present it when being seen at other facilities/providers offices
Explain the patient portal, how it can benefit the patient/caregivers and other providers and/or community service providers the patient has contact with. Help with setup of the portal.
Vital signs and weight.
Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies needed. Prepares equipment and assists providers during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
Re-enforces patient/family education about diagnostic procedures, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
Obtains prior authorizations for medical testing and medications
Prepares patients for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Re-enforces Instructions to patients in collection of samples and tests. Performs diagnostic procedures as determined by the Medical Assistant Scope of Practice, protocols and team huddles.
Maintains/reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Records tests and examination results in patient's chart. Scanning records into Electronic Health Record.
Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls. Re-enforces patient and family instructions regarding medications and treatment.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Schedule referrals and tests.
Venipuncture.
Keep exam rooms neat and stocked with necessary supplies and educational materials, monitoring supply levels and re-ordering as necessary.
Attend in-service training, team and other appropriate medical, staff and health center meetings.
Perform medication reconciliation.
Perform Other Related Duties As Directed Or Required.
Universal Duties
Attends department meetings and any mandated continuing education/training programs
Comply with all pertinent regulatory and agency regulations and operating standards.
Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the Agency’s culture, values and mission.
Participate in activities as part of the team that may include meetings, trainings, and committees.
Other duties as assigned.
Education And Experience Requirements
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program
High School Diploma or GED
Certified Medical Assistant - preferred
2 – 5 years’ experience in clinical or community health settings – preferred
Previous experience in caring for chronic disease patients - preferred
Previous Experience With Health Systems And Data Reports – Preferred

Work Environment/Physical Demands
Blood Borne Pathogen Category (OSHA) – Category I – Job related tasks involve exposure or potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissue and tasks are a condition of employment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that be met by and employee successfully perform the essential functions of this job and include the ability to type and operate a personal computer with various software programs, effectively operate standard office equipment, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, twist, balance, and work at a desk, lift and carry up to 60 pounds, and communicate (written and oral) in a clear and professional manner.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and patients, maintain regular attendance, understand and carry out a variety of oral and written instructions, have knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary, have the ability to learn office principles, practices, and methods, understand filing systems, including numerical, alphabetical, and chronological, learn a variety of procedures, policies, and services of the assigned work unit or program, perform assigned duties with efficiency and accuracy and maintain confidentiality.
