Job summary

University of Maryland Faculty Physicians seeks a Medical Assistant to support physicians and nursing staff in patient care. You will manage charts, coordinate patient flow, and perform delegated clinical tasks.

In this role you may mentor clinical staff, oversee back-office workflows to ensure triage and rooming are prompt, and help document injections and procedures. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, certification, CPR,

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program from an accredited institution.
• Medical Assistant certification (e.g., NAHP, NCCT, AAMA, NHA, AMT, etc.).
• Demonstrated venipuncture skill.
• Graduation from an accredited program or 5+ years of supervised clinical work.
• Ability to perform medical assisting under state and faculty guidelines.
• CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

• Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.
• Follows guidelines to obtain testing prior to the exam and prepares patient.
• Perform routine office testing: phlebotomy, urinalysis, vision/hearing tests, BP, etc.
• Assists provider with procedures and minor surgical procedures.
• Collects specimens for diagnostic testing and assists with cultures as needed.
• Administers and documents injections and other medications.
• Clarifies patient instructions such as test prep and medication administration.
• Exhibits compassion for patients and families; maintains sterile equipment.

Job description

Responsible for assisting physicians and nursing staff with patient care. Responsible for chart management and patient flow. Performs delegated medical tasks and may perform clerical duties. Where the electronic system is in use, this position will utilize the system as documented in the department and/or FPI standard operating procedure and process; mentor and coach clinical staff; oversee workflows in the back office to ensure patients are triaged and roomed promptly; review logbooks to ensure proper documentation of injections, IUDs, Nexplanons etc.; other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program from an accredited institution.
• Medical Assistant certification (such as NAHP, NCCT, AAMA, NHA, AMT, etc.) is Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program from an accredited institution. Special circumstances to consider an exception may include: 2 years of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field. Exemptions will be vetted by Human Resources Director and Department Director.
• Demonstrated skill in venipuncture.
• Graduation from an accredited training program (school) or 5 or more years of supervised work experience in a medical setting.
• Ability to perform all medical assisting responsibilities under state and faculty guidelines.
• CPR certification required

Essential Job Functions

• Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.
• Follows established guidelines to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam. Prepares patient for examination by the health care provider.
• Perform routine office testing, including but not limited to; phlebotomy, sweat and hydration tests, urinalysis, vision testing, hearing screening, pulmonary function testing, temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
• Assists provider with procedures and minor surgical procedures.
• Obtains necessary patient specimens for diagnostic testing which would indicate the MA should also assist with obtaining cultures from rectums, vagina, anus, stool, wounds, throat biopsy specimens, etc.
• Administers and documents injections and other medications given.
• Assists provider with clarification of patient instruction such as, diagnostic test preparation, and medication administration.
• Exhibits compassion and empathy for all patients and families at all times.
• Sterilizes all reusable instruments and equipment as needed.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
