Job summary

Indiana University Health in Bloomington is seeking a PRN Medical Assistant to support patient care in a fast-paced clinic. You will perform basic triage, POC testing, phlebotomy, injections, and medication administration while helping maintain efficient clinic operations.

Under supervision, you will handle registration, scheduling, and EMR documentation, provide patient follow-up, and ensure compliance with AHA BLS, OSHA, CLIA, and coding requirements.

Qualifications

  • AHA BLS certification required.
  • OSHA, CLIA and ADA knowledge required.
  • ICD-10 and CPT coding knowledge required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; MA program graduation required.
  • CMA, RMA, CCMA, NCMA or CMAC certification required/preferred.
  • TB testing validation within 6 months of hire preferred.
  • Strong math and data entry skills.
  • Able to instruct patients and ensure timely medical orders and referrals.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver direct patient care and clinical direction in accordance with organization standards.
  • Perform basic patient triage and point-of-care testing (POC).
  • Complete phlebotomy, injections, and medication administration.
  • Conduct lab result callbacks and provide patient follow-up communication.
  • Handle registration, scheduling, EMR maintenance, and front-office tasks as needed.

Job description

  • Clinic hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-8:00 PM; Saturday & Sunday 8:00 AM-6:00 PM
  • Schedule: PRN - 36 hours per month, 1 weekend day commitment per month
  • Fast-paced environment requiring strong multitasking and teamwork skills
  • Perform basic patient triage and point-of-care (POC) testing
  • Complete phlebotomy, injections, and medication administration
  • Conduct lab result callbacks and provide patient follow-up communication
  • Deliver excellent patient care while supporting efficient clinic operations

    Under the supervision of the designated supervisor and assigned physician, performs duties associated with direct patient care and clinical direction to provide patient care given in accordance with the organization standards. Assures completeness of ordered procedures and treatments, assures smooth patient flow, performs general lab work, instructs patients concerning procedures, treatments and needs, and ensures medical orders and referrals are carried out accurately and in a timely manner. Performs registration and scheduling activities per organizational and departmental procedures. Maintains EMR files and performs general front office functions as needed. May perform computerized physician order entry, only if directed by assigned physician. Expected to precept current MA team members or MA Externs as requested by leadership.

  • AHA Basic Life Support for healthcare workers certification required. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from a Medical Assistant program required.
  • Current certification in medical assisting required from America Association of Medical Assistants (CMA), American Medical Technologists (RMA), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Center for competency Testing (NCMA), and/or American Medical Certification Association (CMAC).
  • Knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, and ADA required.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding required.
  • TB validated (to administer or read) or validation obtained within 6 months of hire preferred.
  • Knowledge of Business Unit Quality Programs, Meaningful Use and Standard Work Programs and concepts within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory and medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of insurance plans and third-party payers.
  • Ability to master standard clinical competencies per current Clinical policy, Point of Care and Skills Competency checklists.
  • Requires basic math and accurate data collection and entry skills.
