Job summary

Indiana University Health System is seeking a Medical Assistant II for an urgent care setting in Avon/Brownsburg. The role consists of three 12-hour shifts weekly (36 hours), with a schedule from 7:45 AM to 8:15 PM, every third weekend and holiday rotation with the team.

Role includes EKGs, injections, rooming, vital signs, POCT, and front-office duties; a CMA/DT certification is preferred and experience with Systoc software is a plus.

Qualifications

  • MA II certification is required.
  • Minimum of 1 year Medical Assistant experience in a healthcare setting.
  • AHA Basic Life Support certification required; other life support may be required.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, ICD-10 and CPT coding.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under supervision and ensure smooth patient flow.
  • Perform general lab work, instruct patients, and manage referrals.
  • Register and schedule activities; maintain EMR files and front office duties.
  • Precept MA team members or externs as requested by leadership.

Location: Floating between:
  • Avon Urgent Care, 10853 E. Highway 36, Avon, IN
  • Brownsburg Urgent Care, 90 E. Garner Road, Brownsburg, IN
Position Details
  • Full-time
  • 36 hours per week
  • Three 12-hour shifts per week
  • Schedule: 7:45 AM - 8:15 PM
  • Every third weekend
  • Holiday rotation with team
  • Self-scheduling available (30-minute scheduling increments)
Qualifications
  • MA II certification required
  • Minimum of 1 year of Medical Assistant experience in a healthcare setting
  • Must be proficient in:
    • EKGs
    • Drawing up and administering injections
    • Patient rooming
    • Obtaining vital signs
    • Point-of-care testing (POC)
Work Environment
  • Team-oriented urgent care setting
  • Typically staffed with:
    • 3 MAs when 2 providers are scheduled
    • 2 MAs when 1 provider is scheduled
  • Patient volume varies seasonally
    • During flu season, volumes can exceed 60 patients per day
    • Similar volumes possible when multiple providers are scheduled

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor and assigned physician, performs duties associated with direct patient care and clinical direction to provide patient care given in accordance with the organization standards. Assures completeness of ordered procedures and treatments, assures smooth patient flow, performs general lab work, instructs patients concerning procedures, treatments and needs, and ensures medical orders and referrals are carried out accurately and in a timely manner. Performs registration and scheduling activities per organizational and departmental procedures. Maintains EMR files and performs general front office functions as needed. May perform computerized physician order entry, only if directed by assigned physician. Expected to precept current MA team members or MA Externs as requested by leadership.

  • AHA Basic Life Support for healthcare workers certification required. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from a Medical Assistant program required.
  • Current certification in medical assisting required from America Association of Medical Assistants (CMA), American Medical Technologists (RMA), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Center for competency Testing (NCMA), and/or American Medical Certification Association (CMAC).
  • Knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, and ADA required.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding required.
  • TB validated (to administer or read) or validation obtained within 6 months of hire preferred.
  • Knowledge of Business Unit Quality Programs, Meaningful Use and Standard Work Programs and concepts within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory and medical procedures.
  • Knowledge of insurance plans and third-party payers.
  • Ability to master standard clinical competencies per current Clinical policy, Point of Care and Skills Competency checklists.
  • Requires basic math and accurate data collection and entry skills.
