Job summary

The University of Utah's pediatric orthopedic clinic seeks a Medical Assistant to support young patients across Salt Lake, Lehi, Provo, and Layton. You will split time between locations with no weekend shifts, providing friendly front-desk and clinical support in a fast-paced team environment.

You’ll perform patient history, cast care, EMR documentation, and back-office tasks while maintaining safety standards and completing required certifications within six months.

Qualifications

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following certifications must be held: Advanced EMT, Paramedic, CMA, ABR‑OE, RMA, NCMA, NHA CMA, NRCMA.
  • If not certified on hire, must complete an accredited Medical Assisting program before date of hire.
  • Certification(s) must be obtained within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care and History: greet pediatric patients and families, collect medical history, ensure comfort and safety.
  • Casting & Clinic Care: apply/remove casts, assist with pins, sutures, post‑op dressings, guide on use of DME.
  • Clinic Support: document in EMR, coordinate appointments and scheduling.
  • Back Office Support: answer calls, prep charts, and perform post‑op follow‑ups.

Responsibilities

At our pediatric orthopedic clinic, you’ll be part of a passionate, dedicated team that makes a real difference in kids’ lives every single day. If you’re excited to be part of a compassionate, fast‑paced environment, and you love variety in your work, we want you to join us!

  • Patient Care and History: You’ll be the friendly face greeting our pediatric patients and their families, collecting important medical history, and making sure each child feels comfortable, safe, and cared for.
  • Casting & Clinic Care: Help apply and remove custom casts, assist with removing surgical pins, sutures, and post‑op dressings, and guide patients on how to use braces, boots, crutches, splints, and other Durable Medical Equipment (DME). Your hands‑on care will make a big difference in their recovery!
  • Clinic Support: You’ll be the go‑to expert for keeping the clinic running smoothly, from documenting in our Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system with accuracy to coordinating appointments and scheduling.
  • Back Office Support: Whether you’re answering patient calls, prepping charts, or making post‑op follow‑up calls, your organizational skills will be key in keeping things efficient and organized behind the scenes.

We’re looking for a dedicated and capable team member who can take on the essential functions of this role with confidence and professionalism. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Essential Skills: Ability to perform all the job duties outlined above, providing quality care and ensuring a smooth clinic experience for our patients.
  • Communication: Strong human relation skills and the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and team members. Your ability to connect with others is key in making each patient’s experience positive.
  • Specialty Proficiency: You’ll need to demonstrate proficiency in our clinic’s specific orthopedic skills within six weeks of hire. Don’t worry, you’ll have time to build your expertise, and specialty skills will be introduced after completing basic competency testing.
  • Safety First: Be aware that, as part of this role, you will have potential exposure to bodily fluids, blood, used needles, and other contaminants. Safety protocols are in place, and it’s essential to adhere to them as part of the daily job hazards.
  • Physical Demands: This job will keep you on your feet! You’ll need to be able to help transfer patients, hold extremities, and operate equipment, including bending and positioning yourself as required to work with different tools and machinery. The ability to withstand the physical demands of being on your feet and moving throughout the day is essential to maintaining the high level of care we provide.
Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following:
  1. Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.
  2. Current certification to practice as a Paramedic in the State of Utah.
  3. Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA.
  4. Currently credentialed in ABR‑OE (Assessment‑Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA.
  5. Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT.
  6. Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.
  7. Current Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA.
  8. Current certification as a NRCMA – Medical Assistant through the National Association for Health Professionals.
  • If candidate is not certified upon hire, they must have completed an accredited Medical Assisting program before date of hire.
  • One of the indicated certifications must be obtained within six months of hire.
