Job summary

University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. is seeking a Medical Assistant to support physicians and nursing staff in patient care at the UMPB – Professional Building in Baltimore.

You will assist with exams, perform routine tests, document histories, and ensure accurate charting and patient education. The ideal candidate has 2–3 years of medical office experience, certification, and completed MA program, with CPR and venipuncture skills.

Qualifications

• Required Medical Assistant certification (NAHP/NCCT/AAMA/NHA/AMT or equivalent).
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
• Two to three years medical assisting and medical office experience.
• Venipuncture skills demonstrated.
• CPR certification required.

Responsibilities

• Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.
• Performs routine office testing including phlebotomy, urinalysis, vision and hearing screening.
• Assists provider with procedures and minor surgical procedures.
• Obtains patient specimens for diagnostic testing and related cultures as needed.
• Administers and documents injections and medications.
• Maintains patient education and clarifies instructions.

Description

Duties will include: assisting physicians and nursing staff in the care of patients; assisting in performing ancillary testing/services for patients; assisting with the monitoring of patient flow; assisting with patient exams; obtaining vital signs; reviewing charts prior to delivering care; providing clear patient education and instructions; administering medications properly; assisting with daily/weekly clinical duties (room stocking, cleaning, etc.); assisting in creating and filing medical records; and other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Gathers and documents brief history and chief complaint in the medical record.
• Follows established guidelines to obtain necessary testing based on the chief complaint prior to the exam. Prepares patient for examination by the health care provider.
• Performs routine office testing, including but not limited to; phlebotomy, sweat and hydration tests, urinalysis, vision testing, hearing screening, pulmonary function testing, temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
• Assists provider with procedures and minor surgical procedures.
• Obtains necessary patient specimens for diagnostic testing which would indicate the MA should also assist with obtaining cultures from rectums, vagina, anus, stool, wounds, throat biopsy specimens, etc.
• Administers and documents injections and other medications given.
• Assists provider with clarification of patient instruction such as, diagnostic test preparation, and medication administration.
• Exhibits compassion and empathy for all patients and families at all times.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
• Two to three years medical assisting and medical office experience.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program from an accredited institution.
• Medical Assistant certification (such as NAHP, NCCT, AAMA, NHA, AMT, etc.) is required.
• Demonstrated skill in venipuncture.
• CPR certification is required.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
