Job Description

Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician.

Responsibilities
  1. Maintains patient flow during clinic hours. Documents review of systems; measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respirations, blood pressure, weight, and height (see Appendix A for specifics); updates medical, social, and family history; reviews medications and updates medication list at each visit. Correctly records patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR). May assist in training new employees.
  2. Prepares patient charts in EMR for visits by scanning, abstracting, and reviewing to ensure all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records are in the patient's chart. Accesses and navigates websites or contacts outside facilities to obtain necessary information. May act as Super User for EMR.
  3. Refills medications and pre-authorizes medications, communicating with patients, pharmacies, or insurance companies as needed. Maintains records of patient samples and medications, disposing of expired medications. Prepares treatment rooms, maintains cleanliness, and orders medical supplies. Completes patient assistance paperwork as needed.
  4. Obtains pertinent medical information from patients to facilitate decision-making per office protocols. Returns calls, responds to MyChart messages, and manages work queues in EMR/system. Coordinates work queues if applicable. Handles incoming calls, schedules appointments, checks patients in and out, and completes pre-certifications.
  5. Operates diagnostic equipment such as EKGs and cardiac monitors. Performs clinical duties including phlebotomy and cast removal as assigned.
  6. Maintains a safe and secure work environment by following standards and legal regulations. Ensures patient confidentiality and adheres to legal responsibilities. Supports quality measures and enhances patient experience.
Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills: Please describe any specialized knowledge or skills required. Do not personalize based on current staff. List any required education.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate Degree and/or Certified/Registered Medical Assistant preferred. Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or relevant experience required.

Experience: 2 to 5 years of Medical Assistant or relevant experience preferred; experience in various care settings is a plus.

Skills and Knowledge: Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, EMR, scheduling systems) required. Strong communication skills for patient and team interactions. Willingness to travel as needed. Clinical skills such as phlebotomy, EKG, sutures removal, splinting, etc., are highly preferred.

Licenses & Certifications: Certified/Registered Medical Assistant preferred. BLS certification required. Must complete skills orientation successfully.
