Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Medical Assistant II to provide clinical care and support the office/clinic team. Under licensed clinician supervision, you will record vital signs, assist with examinations, and perform basic procedures in a busy outpatient setting.

The role emphasizes patient communication, room preparation, specimen handling, and sterilization, with a schedule Monday–Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm, 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • BLS/Heart Saver certification required; if not available at hire, must be obtained within 3 months.
  • Medical Assistant credential approved by Massachusetts Department of Health.
  • Equivalent education/experience may substitute for the above where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and record vital signs.
  • Perform EKGs, phlebotomy, and Point-of-Care tests per clinic standards.
  • Prepare, document and administer non-intravenous injections as directed.
  • Assist in routine physical exams or clinical procedures.
  • Review lab results and bring abnormal findings to clinicians’ attention.
  • Communicate observations to licensed clinicians and prepare rooms accordingly.
  • Ensure instruments and scopes are cleaned, sterilized, and repackaged.
  • Operate sterilization/cleaning systems as needed.
  • Assist in moving, lifting, and transporting patients following safety practices.
  • Follow patient arrival procedures and scheduling guidelines.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent
Current BLS or Heart Saver (HS) certification
Medical Assistant credential (Massachusetts DOH approved)
Equivalent combination of education and experience

Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Medical Assistant II (MA II) provides clinical care and performs clerical duties to support office/clinic functions. Will receive workplace education and training to assist providers and the healthcare team in the care of patients.

Major Responsibilities
  • 1. Escorts patients to examination rooms, take and record vital signs such as blood pressures, temperatures, height, weight, etc. Collects and documents patient health status, history, and documents and monitors patient progress following standard procedures.
  • 2. Performs EKG's, phlebotomy, Point of Care (POC) tests according to clinic/office standards.
  • 3. May prepare, document, and administer non-intravenous injections as directed or required by office/clinic, within scope of practice.
  • 4. Assists in performing routine physical examination or clinical procedures.
  • 5. Reviews laboratory results and ensures abnormal results are immediately brought to the attention of the physicians and others, as appropriate.
  • 6. Provides clear, timely communication to the appropriate licensed clinician regarding observations and changes reported in patient per office/clinic guidelines. Sets up/prepares rooms based on patient care requirements. Assists in the setup, maintenance, disassembly, and cleaning of patient equipment.
  • 7. Ensures instruments and scopes are cleaned, sterilized, and repackaged per office/clinic protocol.
  • 8. Operates the sterilization/cleaning systems, as necessary.
  • 9. Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients as directed following policy standards. Utilize proper safety techniques and body mechanic in all work-related activities.
  • 10. Follows procedures for arriving patients and scheduling appointments.

Position Qualifications
License/Certification/Education
Required
  • 1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Heart Saver (HS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. If not available upon hire, a BLS/HS must be obtained within 3 months from date of hire. If certification is not obtained within 3 months of hire, the employee may be terminated or employee may apply for another position for which they meet the minimum qualifications.
  • 3. Medical Assistant credential, approved by the Massachusetts Department of Health (ARMA, NHA, etc.).
  • Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

Position requires work indoors in a patient care office or clinic environment. Hand dexterity, hearing and vision ability to take direction from a patient or provider, adjust equipment, observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift, up to 50 pounds. Work is of medium demand, standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
