Job summary

Akron Children's Hospital is seeking a Medical Assistant II to provide proficient clinical and administrative support under the supervision of a Provider and licensed Nurse. The role includes assisting with training needs within scope and ensuring accurate documentation in EPIC.

Responsibilities cover patient prep, vital signs, phlebotomy, specimen handling, data collection for discharge planning, scheduling, and room preparation.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  • BLS training from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  • Years of experience supervising: None.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for examination; takes and records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications as directed by the Providers according to policy and procedure.
  • Collects data contributing to assessment and evaluation of individualized care and needs of patients; includes discharge plans under direction of the Licensed Nurse.
  • Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy and procedure.
  • Communicates patient findings to Providers and Licensed Nurse using appropriate documentation processes.
  • Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system.
  • Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling and patient tracking as needed.
  • Performs department-specific clinical duties such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and other procedures.
  • Performs routine office tasks such as faxing, copying, and filing.
  • Cleans, stocks, and prepares examination rooms.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Triage work-related issues with minimal escalation.
  • Participates in departmental process improvement projects.
  • Follows safety policies to maintain a safe care environment for patients and staff.

  4. Communicates patient findings and pertinent information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse utilizing appropriate communication/documentation processes
  5. Accurate and timely documentation of care within EPIC system
  6. Performs point-of-service activities such as appointment scheduling, visit preparation, co-payment collection and patient tracking as needed
  7. Performs clinical duties that are department specific such as POCT, hearing and vision screenings, and any other procedures

Other information
Technical Expertise
  1. Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
  2. Knowledge of and experience in medical terminology is required.
  3. Experience working in healthcare environment is preferred.
  4. Experience working in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
  5. Experience working in electronic medical record (i.e., EPIC) or similar software is preferred.
Education and Experience
  1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  2. Completion of an approved (valid) Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is required.
  3. Certification:Basic Life Support (BLS) training from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Certification: Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  5. Years of relevant experience: no experience required.
  6. Years of experience supervising: None.
