Job summary

CommuniCare+OLE is seeking a Medical Assistant I (temporary) at the North Napa Campus in Napa, CA. This role supports medical visits with patient intake, rooming, and documentation as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The position is non-exempt, hourly, with a schedule Monday–Friday 8am–5pm and up to 3 Saturdays per year. Benefits are not provided to temporary staff. Prior MA education and EMT/Phlebotomy credentials are valued.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited CA medical assistant program; CA MA certification strongly preferred.
• EMT certification or equivalent allowed in lieu of MA certification.
• Phlebotomy certificate strongly preferred.
• Entry level position up to 1 year of experience.
• Must certify and remain current in CPR.

STATUS: This is a temporary position with a duration of up to 6 months or less

SCHEDULE: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm (up to 3 Saturdays a year)

PAY RANGE: $25.58 to $31.26/hr, depending on years of experience

Established in 2023, CommuniCare+OLE is the result of a union of two health centers with deep roots in their respective communities and reputations for providing high‑quality primary care to all, regardless of insurance or ability to pay: OLE Health of Napa and Solano Counties and CommuniCare Health Centers of Yolo County. JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

The Medical Assistant works with the medical services staff to assist with medical visits and provide initial patient intake. The Medical Assistant works as part of a multidisciplinary team composed of the clinic services coordinator, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and community health workers educators to provide comprehensive care to a primarily low‑income, non‑English speaking population. The Medical Assistant I ensures optimum patient care through the efficient rooming of patients, exhibiting good communication with patients and other staff, performing medical procedures, providing patient education, follow‑up care instructions, and completing daily documentation.

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS/TRAINING

• Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• Satisfactory completion of an accredited medical assistant program in California; CA Medical Assistant certification strongly preferred.
• Must have EMT certification or similar certification in lieu of Medical Assistant certification.
• Phlebotomy Certificate strongly preferred.
• Experience/Lived Experience: Entry level position up to one year of experience.
• Must certify and remain current in CPR.
• Special Skills/Training:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Interview patients for program eligibility for a variety of health care coverage programs including, but not limited to, Covered California, Medi‑Cal, Healthy Families, Patient Assistance Program (PAP), and County Medical Services Program (CMSP).
• Assist patients with applications to the various programs and in collection of necessary documentation as required.
• Educate patients, family members, and community about various health coverage programs.
• Enter patient information into the electronic health record system.
• Support community events and health fairs.
• Greet patients in exam room areas and drive positive patient‑customer service experience.
• Room patients, obtain and document vital signs.
• Collect and document patient history and current state of health.
• Disinfect and prepare treatment rooms, equipment, and supplies in timely manner to ensure optimum flow.
• Provide patient education and follow‑up care instructions as directed by provider at discharge.
• Perform panel management and non‑visit tasks as assigned by provider or nurse.
• Work closely with providers to provide high‑quality care by addressing patient health needs and concerns.
• Proactively ensure that provider/MA “huddles” take place on time in preparation for each shift.
• Perform routine screening and procedures as directed by medical provider and document findings as per protocol.
• Perform medical assistant procedures, including: finger sticks for hemoglobin checks; ear washes; nebulizer treatments; urine dipsticks; specimen collection for throat/urine cultures; wound cleaning; PPD, INR, glucose, HCG, Hemoglobin A1C.
• Administer immunizations per provider order and document in electronic health record.
• Ensure logs, forms, records, and charts are complete, thorough, and accurate.
• Document freezer & refrigerator temperatures and take appropriate action to maintain correct temperatures.
• Run quality assurance tests daily to ensure proper functionality of equipment for in‑house testing.
• Practice standard safety precautions to ensure self‑safety, staff safety, and patient safety, including handling of waste and sharps.
• Communicate clearly with providers, staff, and patients to promote optimum clinic flow and proper hand‑off; report urgent issues to Back Office Supervisor.
• Complete chart prep, support with QI measures, and carry out other administrative tasks assigned by the Back Office Supervisor.
• Respond to patient messages in a timely manner as indicated by site leadership.
• Proactively help teammates during downtime.
• Recommend improvements in processes and practices through proper channels.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
