Medical Assistant I (Healthcare)
Position Overview

The Medical Assistant (MA) reports directly to the Back Office Supervisor (BOS). The MA provides nursing assistance to multi-specialty LCH clinical providers, including but not limited to administration of injections, assisting with procedures, taking vital signs, vision and hearing tests, patient education, and necessary EHR chart work. The Medical Assistant also assists with clerical functions and helps update and maintain accurate medical records. The MA operates under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse and the direct supervision of the Back Office Supervisor.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Provide quality customer service care with a positive attitude.
- Ensure patient demographics are current and accurate at the time of visit.
- Obtain and document vital signs in the electronic health record, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, oxygen saturation (if indicated), pain level, and last menstrual period.
- Follow LCH's Patient Intake workflow based on the type of visit and perform required screening tests such as vision and hearing tests.
- Reconcile allergy, medication, and problem lists at every visit, completing social history, family history, medical/surgical history, preventive medical information, and chronic care information accurately in the EHR.
- Assist clinical staff with examination procedures and utilize Standing Orders to administer, order, or schedule tests, medications, or referrals.
- Administer medications and immunizations according to LCH policies and procedures.
- Update patient charts with accurate data, including immunization history and lab results, and complete lab orders as indicated.
- Clean and sterilize medical instruments and equipment per policies.
- Utilize tracking systems for pap smears, immunizations, and breast exams.
- Perform procedures ordered by providers, such as wound care, splint application, airway treatment, ear lavages, EKG, NST, and sterile procedures.
- Ensure accurate and complete documentation in electronic health records and monitor patient flow.
- Prepare forms to meet Payer, State, and Federal requirements.
- Adhere to clinic policies and protocols, review EHR and Outlook Inbox daily, and address tasks within 24 hours.
- Conduct quality controls and checks regularly and support inventory management.
- Maintain clinic safety and patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA.
- Perform autoclave protocols, including weekly maintenance and monthly spore testing.
- During patient rooming, inquire about any completed forms from the Front Office.
- Review daily Quality huddle reports and administer missing patient metrics during visits.
- Complete appropriate handoff/referral for health education and provide clinical support at other LCH sites as required.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Education:
- Medical Assistant Certificate of completion from a certified school.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Current BLS CPR Certification.
