Actalent is seeking a Medical Assistant (Float) for the Orthopedic Hand Surgery and Sports Medicine practice. The role emphasizes back-office clinical support, patient intake, and rooming in a fast-paced setting.

Medical Assistant (Float) – Orthopedic Hand Surgery & Sports Medicine

This Medical Assistant position provides compassionate, high-quality care to patients in a fast-paced orthopedic hand surgery and sports medicine setting. The role focuses on back‑office clinical support, patient intake, and rooming, as well as maintaining accurate electronic medical records and ensuring exam rooms and supplies are fully prepared for busy clinic days. The position is a float role based primarily in Bridgewater, NJ, with some travel to additional locations as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, patient‑centered care to individuals with orthopedic and sports‑related conditions, as well as patients managing arthritis and joint pain.
• Perform patient intakes, including rooming patients, verifying information, and collecting relevant medical histories and previous visit notes.
• Update and maintain accurate patient information, including family histories and prior visit documentation, in the electronic medical record systems.
• Conduct vital sign checks and document results clearly and promptly.
• Perform medication reconciliation to ensure patient medication lists are current and accurate.
• Prepare charts prior to patient visits so providers have complete and organized information available.
• Prepare patient exam rooms before visits, ensuring cleanliness, organization, and availability of necessary supplies and equipment.
• Complete prior authorizations for treatments, imaging, or medications as required by providers and insurance plans.
• Restock exam rooms and supply closets regularly and complete inventory tasks to ensure adequate supplies are available.
• Triage incoming phone calls, responding to or routing physician and patient questions appropriately and in a timely manner.
• Update electronic medical records using systems such as EPIC and Athena, entering clinical and administrative information with a high degree of accuracy.
• Support physicians and physician assistants during busy clinic sessions, helping to manage a high volume of patient visits efficiently.
• Assist with rooming patients for multiple providers, including sports medicine physicians and orthopedic hand surgeons, as well as physician assistants.
• Adapt communication style and workflow to effectively support providers with different personalities and work speeds.
• Collaborate closely with other medical assistants and clinical staff to ensure smooth patient flow and high‑quality care throughout the day.
• Maintain a professional, calm, and organized demeanor in a high‑volume environment where up to 80–100 patients may be seen in a day.

Essential Skills

• Medical assisting experience, with 1 year of experience preferred; open to new graduates from accredited medical assistant programs.
• Accredited medical assistant education and diploma, with eligibility for CMA strongly valued.
• Proficiency in medical assisting tasks such as patient intake, vital sign measurement, medication reconciliation, and chart preparation.
• Experience or strong comfort working in orthopedic and sports medicine settings, including hand surgery practice.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced office environment with high patient volume and rapid visit turnover.
• Competence with electronic medical record systems, including EPIC and Athena, or similar EMR platforms.
• Strong patient care skills, with a focus on empathy, clear communication, and professionalism.
• Ability to triage phone calls and respond appropriately to patient and physician questions.
• Organizational skills to manage inventory, restock rooms, and maintain prepared exam spaces.
• Flexibility and adaptability to work with providers who have varying communication styles and work speeds.
• Reliable availability within a broad daytime window (generally between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.) to align with physician schedules.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential is preferred and strongly valued, though not strictly required.
• Comfort working with patients experiencing sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, tendonitis, bursitis, concussions, overuse injuries, and post‑surgical rehabilitation needs.
• Experience supporting patients with arthritis and joint pain, including older adults seeking injury prevention and mobility support.
• Ability to manage and prioritize tasks in a setting where multiple physicians and physician assistants are seen in a single day.
• Strong teamwork skills, with a collaborative approach to working alongside other medical assistants and clinical staff.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals in a busy clinic.
• Attention to detail in documentation, prior authorizations, and EMR updates to support accurate and efficient patient care.
• Willingness to float between locations as needed while maintaining consistent, high‑quality patient service.

Work Environment

This role is based primarily in a high‑volume sports medicine and orthopedic hand surgery office in Bridgewater, NJ, with floating assignments to additional locations on certain days. The environment is fast‑paced, with the office seeing approximately 80–100 patients per day and individual physicians seeing 20–50 patients daily. You will support multiple sports medicine physicians, orthopedic hand surgeons, and physician assistants, and work closely with a team of medical assistants once the team is fully staffed. The standard schedule is a full‑time, 40‑hour week, Monday through Friday, generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. based on physician schedules. Some Saturday morning shifts may be required, typically between 7:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m. or 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. There is a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break each day. The practice uses electronic medical record systems such as EPIC and Athena and operates in a busy, team‑oriented environment where adaptability, collaboration, and clear communication are essential.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $28.00/hr.
