Job Summary:

MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant Float to join our team at MedStar Health.

The Medical Assistant-Float performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, assisting providers with patient exams, and telephone and clerical support. The position requires routine assignment ('float') among multiple practice sites/locations within an assigned geographic region.

Primary Duties:

  • Assist providers with patient preparation for examinations, minor procedures, and patient education. Support other clinical team members to ensure optimal patient flow, managing variable and unpredictable patient volumes. Provide clerical support.
  • Screen all patients for preventive care needs, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risks. Conduct surveillance for care transitions, urgent/emergent needs, or follow-up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews and identify behavioral health needs using appropriate screening tools, notifying providers of findings.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives to enhance care quality and safety. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Engage in population management activities, including patient self-management support, care/health goal setting, and pre-visit planning. Perform selected patient and laboratory testing, and document activities in the EMR.
  • Document clinically related activities accurately in the EMR. Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document in logs or forms. Escort patients and assist with discharge activities. Provide chaperoning as per policy. Manage infection prevention, environmental responsibilities, and inventory of supplies. Provide telephone screening services following protocols.
  • Under supervision, insert IV catheters for fluid therapy or medication administration. Under onsite physician supervision, insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheters, and prepare/administer oral drugs and injections. Perform phlebotomy. Use EMR to propose medication refills and complete test requisitions. Contact insurance for pre-authorizations.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 6 months experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by AAMA or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by AMT within 1 year.
  • CPR certification within 90 days.
  • Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting preferred; completed externship at MedStar may substitute for experience.
  • Experience with electronic medical records preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • For cardiology offices only: 6 months experience in ambulatory care or related degree/coursework.
