Job Description

The Medical Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards.

The Medical Assistant supports physicians, nurses, and other licensed staff by facilitating patient flow, assisting with patient care activities, and performing administrative functions. Responsibilities include maintaining neat, safe patient areas, promoting patient satisfaction, safeguarding confidentiality, and assisting with procedures.

Responsibilities
  1. Ensure efficient patient flow:
    • Escort patients, verify identity, prepare for exams, obtain vital signs, document visit reasons, update allergies and medication info, and prepare exam rooms.
    • Respond to patient needs and prioritize tasks to maintain flow.
  2. Assist practitioners with procedures such as ECG, venipuncture, immunizations, specimen collection, and waived testing.
  3. Provide high-quality care:
    • Prepare and stock exam rooms, maintain equipment, monitor inventory, and ensure safety protocols.
  4. Promote patient satisfaction:
    • Interact professionally and friendly, accept delegated responsibilities, assist colleagues, and communicate effectively.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Proof of eligibility for certification exam (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, NRCMA).
  • For new graduates within 6 months: a letter from school or certifying body.
  • For non-certified or graduates past 6 months: a certifying body letter.
  • Complete one certification within 6 months of employment (CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, NRCMA).
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • American Heart Association BLS/CPR certification.
  • Strong computer skills.

Preferred:

  • Completion of accredited MA training program.
  • 1-2 years ambulatory care experience.
  • Experience with EMR systems.
