Brief Overview

This position provides clinical responsibilities delivering high quality patient care and clerical support for patients within the inpatient and outpatient medical clinics/practices and is the initial focal point of the patient experience. Accountable for the gathering, entry and verification of registration information. In addition, collects co‑pays, may provide entry of patient charges and facilitates the care process by effectively processing information in a timely and accurate manner. This position must retain a high level of professionalism at all points of time.

What you will do
  • Assist physician and other providers to examine and treat patients, including handing instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures. May give medications or immunizations, administer basic healthcare or medical treatment, change dressings on wounds, and applying bandages, dressings, or splints.
  • Obtain, identify and record patients' medical history, vital statistics, prevention data, medications, chief complaints and other pertinent information; observe, record and report pertinent patient symptoms, reactions, condition changes or information such as test results in medical records.
  • Collect, prepare and transport blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log specimens and prepare for testing. Perform basic laboratory test, dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize instruments. Perform phlebotomy functions, venipuncture and skin puncture procedures as requested or required by provider.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping rooms neat, clean and stocked with adequate medical supplies. Maintain instruments and prepare sterilization as required.
  • Operate electrocardiogram (EKG) or other medical equipment to administer routine diagnostic test.
  • Prepare patient for visit, keep them updated on the status of their appointment and assist with rescheduling or scheduling follow‑up appointments. Instruct patient as to general clinic policies, patients' rights and responsibilities as needed. Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets or physician's instructions.
  • Greet patients upon arrival in practice, understand and perform individual role in assuring compliance for regulatory, accreditation and system process. If assigned, answer phone and route patient to appropriate clinical or administration area.
  • Complete and verify registration information for each patient:
    • Verify patient identity per protocol.
    • Verify address utilizing open‑ended questions.
    • Ensure benefit verification process for current service date has been completed.
    • Scan insurance card(s) into system.
    • Ensure patient has received HIPAA, Financial Policy, MSP, Patient Notification of Provider‑based clinic (if appropriate) have been signed, and scan as needed into system.
  • Collect co‑pay as well as any outstanding self‑pay balance:
    • Provide patient with receipt of transaction.
    • Enter into system.
    • Maintain cash‑drawer, reconcile any end‑of‑day cash receipts per ambulatory protocol.
  • Work assigned encounter edits on a frequent basis throughout the day. Depending upon size of department, assigned work could also be Encounter Prep, Eligibility Checks, Appointments to schedule, Appointments to reschedule, no‑shows, encounters with no charge.
  • Perform check‑out duties for patients as they exit practice:
    • Schedule patient for follow‑up as requested by provider.
    • Provide assistance for referrals as directed.
  • If dedicated scheduling staff do not exist in the department, schedule both new patients and follow‑up care based on patients calling into the practice. If scheduling new patients, be responsible for obtaining necessary information for insurance verification.
  • Assist patients in obtaining necessary referrals for follow‑up services. Also may be responsible for obtaining proper authorizations and pre‑certifications for all outside procedures scheduled through the outpatient clinic or department.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an approved Medical Assistant program.
  • Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the school‐age, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient as specialty assignment dictates.
  • Current documentation of a national certification as a Certified Medical Assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or for the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or for Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or for Certified Clinical Medical Assistant through National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) or for CCAMA through MedCA Certifications.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) upon hire required.
  • At least 1 year experience as a medical assistant.
