Employment Status: Full time. Shift: Day (United States of America). Facility: 3 Riverside Cir - Roanoke. Requisition Number: R160449. Position: Medical Assistant - Certified - Colorectal Practice (Open).
Responsibilities
- Provide basic technical clinical services and clerical support in the delivery of quality patient care as directed by licensed staff, physician or mid‑level practitioner.
- Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
- Comply with all federal, state, and local agency requirements and standards; and Carilion and CMG policies, procedures, and standards.
- Provide basic clinical care and perform advanced technical skills for patients of all ages according to established standards; document and report patient observations to licensed staff.
- Collect patient assessment data (height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, current medications, etc.) for assessment by licensed staff.
- Transport patients through the office; prepare the patient for provider evaluation, including obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, and assisting during exams and procedures.
- Maintain work areas (exam/treatment and x-ray rooms and lab) in a clean, safe manner; restock supplies and instruments; sterilize reusable equipment as needed.
- Document patient information in the medical record in a timely manner (update treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, patient concerns, etc.) in compliance with Carilion Clinic policies and procedures.
- Observe all safety precautions and standards.
- Assist with lab procedures, including collecting urine specimens, collecting and preparing blood samples for reference lab, and labeling specimens with accurate patient ID as ordered by the physician.
- Perform diagnostic tests (EKGs, audiograms, vision testing, spirometry) as appropriate for assessment by licensed staff.
- Assist with referral authorizations for specialists and pre-authorization for testing and ancillary services as directed by licensed staff, provider or mid‑level practitioner.
- Perform clerical and office functions: greet patients, check-in/check-out, update demographic information, answer phones, schedule appointments, and receive/relay messages.
- Utilize automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
- Perform other basic technical clinical and clerical duties relating to the operation of the practice as assigned and for which training has been provided.
- Administer oral and parenteral medications after completing required education and orientation competency validation under supervision of the physician.
- Collect patient assessment data for assessment by licensed staff as described above.
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience: None.
- Liciensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NAHP, NHA, NCRA).
- May be hired on a provisional status once the applicant receives the letter confirming they have taken the certification exam and have a provisional passing score.
- Life Support: AHA BLS-HCP required.
- Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective communication and problem-solving skills; effective computer skills for automated systems, including electronic medical records.
