The Medical Assistant will assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room.
  • Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Collect patient information/history, taking vitals, performing screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Relay instructions to patients/families.
  • Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with HIPAA and other regulations.
  • Obtain lab/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Complete forms/requisitions as needed.
  • Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Schedule appointments.
  • Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
  • Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Manage inventory of supplies; restock exam/procedure rooms.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
  • Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure.
  • Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, and level one labs.
  • Assist physicians with procedures.
  • Comply with requirements of regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain confidentiality of medical records and data. Follow UPMC policies.
  • Under supervision of a physician, administer injectable medication and vaccines when appropriate.
  • Perform other front office responsibilities as required.
  • Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum education requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent. Basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic, and treatment room responsibilities are required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • CPR certification based on AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.
  • Clearances must be dated within 90 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
  • Act 34 clearance with renewal.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their experience and education within the Medical Assistant Career Ladder.
