Job summary

Waterbury Health is seeking a Medical Assistant for our outpatient cardiology services. You will assist providers, perform phlebotomy and EKGs, review medications, take histories and vital signs, and help prepare exam rooms and schedules.

This full-time role supports the cardiology team, requires a high school diploma or CMA certification, EMR experience (Cerner/EPIC), and a willingness to perform clerical duties in a busy office.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform medical assistant duties including phlebotomy, EKG, med review, vital signs and basic office testing.
  • Experience with EMR systems Cerner and EPIC is required or highly preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus CMA certification or relevant medical office experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist providers in preparing for visits and exams; take histories and vital signs; review medications.
  • Phlebotomy and EKG performed as needed; prepare exam rooms and maintain supplies.
  • Coordinate scheduling of tests, referrals, and follow-ups; manage patient records and confidentiality.

Job description

Full Time , Days , 40 HR Days Mon-Fri 0800 AM - 4:30 PM

Assists in the delivery of cardiac health care and patient care management in the adult population by performing selected clinical and administrative duties. This role would service the hospital-basedoutpatient cardiac surgery and structural heart clinics.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists providers in preparing for office visits. Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs and performs medication review. Performs phlebotomy and EKG as needed.
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary supplies. Assists with ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments and follows through with referrals when indicated.
  • Screen telephone calls for a referral to a nurse or provider.
  • Maintains patient files and records and other information according to established office standards.
  • Implements orders under provider direction and notifies patients of results as requested.
  • Remains updated and current on the electronic health record policies and procedures.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees and professional development activities as required. Maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient and office confidentiality.
  • Performs related work as required. Note: This position requires a willingness to learn some clerical assistant duties in the outpatient cardiology office, including answering phone calls, filing, billing, faxing, and using the EKG GE MUSEsystem.

Supervision:

Reports directly to the outpatient cardiology manager.

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires a full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Involves frequent standing and walking. Liftingand carryingitems weighing up to 20 pounds. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires exposure to bodily fluids. Ability to work in a busy medical office environment.

Performance Requirements:(Required knowledge, skills and abilities)

  • Ability to perform medical assistant duties such as supporting the provider, performing phlebotomy and EKG, medication review and reconciliation, vital signs, and other minor office testing and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and patients.
  • Interaction with other healthcare staff: physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and technicians.
  • Ability to follow direction and comply with office policies and procedures.
  • Computer proficient. EMR experience using Cerner and EPIC.
  • Knowledge of general and cardiac medical terminology.
  • Working knowledge of insurance requirements and preauthorization protocols.

Education:(Acceptable experience and training)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited program for medical assistants.
  • Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants or at least 3years of relevant experience in a medical office preferred.
  • Prior experience in a cardiology or cardiac surgery office preferred.
