MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our team at MedStar Health Ambulatory Services. The ideal candidate will be a certified Medical Assistant with excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.
The Medical Assistant will perform clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, assisting providers with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support.
This position may require floating to other sites/locations within the system.

Assist providers with patient preparation, office procedures, examinations, and patient education. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow and manage patient volume. Review and prepare for scheduled visits, screen patients for preventive care, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and fall risk. Conduct surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews, including patient screening and coaching on disease management, motivation to change, learning care needs, and community outreach. Identify potential behavioral health needs and notify providers.
Report actual or potential problems concerning patients, families, and staff. Participate in performance improvement initiatives. Attend safety and infection control training. Maintain compliance by auditing logs, managing medication supplies, checking emergency equipment, keeping areas clutter-free, and participating in population management activities including patient engagement, care planning, and health goal setting.
Perform selected patient/laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, vision and hearing testing. Remove sutures/staples, document activities in the EMR, and perform follow-up tests like pap smears, Pb levels, HIV, mammograms, and STD testing. Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document accordingly.
Escort and assist with patient discharge activities, provide chaperoning, and fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities. Update records of equipment maintenance, manage drug and supply inventories, and provide telephone screening services according to protocols.
May insert IV catheters for IV therapy or medication administration, insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheters, and prepare/administer oral drugs and injections (intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular). May perform phlebotomy. Use EMR to propose medication refills for provider approval, and complete requisitions for tests and insurance pre-authorizations.
This position offers a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08.
