Provides clinical and patient care support services to ensure the efficient operation of the medical center.

Responsibilities W Indicates Primary Duties/Responsibilities

Essential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the job's purpose and are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. Following are essential functions/standards of the job, evaluate how the employee performed relative to these standards by checking the appropriate box.

  • Answers telephone in a timely, professional manner. Forwards calls or takes detailed messages as appropriate.
  • Proper and accurate charting of patients and procedures.
  • Demonstrates effective knowledge of medical terminology and medical abbreviations.
  • Cooperatively assists doctor with office exams and procedures.
  • Demonstrates bandaging skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic first aid.
  • Appropriately performs/demonstrates knowledge and/or use of:
    • Vitals: B/P, temperature., resp., pulse, height and weight
    • Exam room preparation
    • Medical and Surgical aseptic techniques
    • Patients rights and ethics (patient confidentiality)
    • Venipuncture
    • Collecting specimens; PAP's, throat, wound and urine cultures
    • Routine urine tests
    • Basic understanding and administration of drugs
    • Universal precautions
    • Draping and positioning patients
    • Recording EKG's
    • Pulmonary function tests
    • Use of nebulizer
    • Injections
    • PDR and other reference books
    • Care of surgical instruments and sterilization
    • Visual acuity testing
    • Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

    • HIPAA compliance - complies with all of the privacy & confidentiality policy & procedures outlined in the "HIPAA Program" of Wayne Memorial Hospital. All information encountered during course of employment is treated as confidential and privileged information. Complies with all policy and procedure pertaining to computer passwords, downloading information, transmission of information, etc.

    • Demonstrates proper and safe body mechanics as taught in "Back Safety" program.
    • Maintains familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

    Competency Assessment

    The process of ensuring that each employee demonstrates continued ability to perform the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of his/her position in a competent fashion. Following are the competency standards for the position. Indicate how the employee demonstrates competency relative to the standard listed by checking the appropriate boxes.

    Departmental Competency

    • Demonstrates efficiency and appropriate use of information systems (Physician Billing, E-mail, internet, EVS verification and PA Medicaid software applications).
    • Demonstrates and facilitates appropriate use of copier/printer, fax machine, communication, and log books.
    • Demonstrates effective knowledge of medical terminology, procedure tray set-up, room set up by procedure, basic first aid, administration of injectable drugs, specimen collection, medical/surgical aseptic techniques.
    • Demonstrates appropriate technique/procedure for pulmonary function tests, use of nebulizer, care of surgical instruments and sterilization, visual acuity testing, taking of vital signs, bandaging skills, EKG, blood glucose monitoring use and controls.
    • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of phlebotomy procedures.
    • Displays efficiency in maintaining pharmaceutical stock items.
    • Demonstrates proper and accurate charting of patients and procedures, use of medical records .
    • Demonstrates accuracy with details and strong organizational skills.
    • Facilitates and maintains current CPR certification.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant education program
    • Certified or Registered MA or equivalent credential
    • Prior Medical Assistant experience preferred.
