Job summary

Northern Nevada HOPES in Reno is seeking a Medical Assistant to support clinicians in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in a busy community health setting. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure smooth patient flow and clinical excellence.

You will perform rooming, vital signs, injections, specimen collection, education, and care coordination while maintaining accurate EMR documentation and complying with clinic policies.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program or equivalent.
  • BLS certification required.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records systems.

PURPOSE

The Medical Assistant supports patients and healthcare providers in delivering a smooth, high-quality, and efficient care experience through clinical and administrative tasks.

JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant primary role is to deliver and assist healthcare providers in delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to patients while supporting the multidisciplinary team. The Medical Assistant actively engages with patients by providing education, resources, and hands-on support to promote optimal health and wellness. This role participates in both clinical and administrative tasks to deliver high-quality patient care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Engage patients using a patientcentered approach by meeting them at their stage of readiness, building trust, and establishing strong rapport to support wellness goals.
  • Room patients, complete intake assessments, collect vital signs, document relevant medical and other information in alignment with visit rooming requirements.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with patients.
  • Provide clinical and care coordination support by administering therapeutic medications, injections, immunizations, and performing diagnostic tests under the supervision of a provider.
  • Maintain a safe care environment for patients and document care timely and accurately in the electronic medical record system.
  • Support patient education, resource linkage, system navigation, and care followup, while identifying barriers to care.
  • Assist with training or onboarding of medical assistants and medical assistant externs.
  • Provide clinic and team support by communicating patient concerns to providers, participating in Medical Assistant team meetings, and helping ensure effective Medical Assistant practice.
  • Contribute to clinic operations by notifying Medical Assistant leadership when medical supplies, therapeutic medications, or vaccines are running low and requesting replenishment.
  • Uphold professional boundaries and demonstrate appropriate conduct within the Medical Assistant team and the multidisciplinary care team.
  • Implement best practices in infection prevention and control by routinely cleaning and disinfecting high touch patient surfaces, exam rooms, and clinic areas in accordance with established HOPES policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to vaccine best practices by consistently applying the seven rights of vaccine administration, maintaining proper vaccine cold chain management, documenting administration of the vaccine in a timely manner, verifying provider vaccine orders for accuracy and compliance, and adhering to all HOPES policies and procedures surrounding vaccine administration.
  • Promote excellent customer service by answering and returning patient phone calls in a timely manner and ensuring all administrative orders are processed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain administrative workload expectations and proactively communicate with leadership when additional support or resources are needed.
  • Provide Medical Assistant support to additional clinical services offered at HOPES, including but not limited to ultrasound, nutrition, prior authorizations, etc.
  • Ensure accurate specimen collection, processing, and handling by verifying proper labeling with patient identifiers and confirming specimens meet specific laboratory requirements.
  • Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with direct leadership and multidisciplinary care teams.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to support continuous quality improvement by completing thorough chart preparation prior to patient visits and ensuring quality measures are met in alignment with visit rooming requirements.
  • Prepare and set up procedures for providers by ensuring appropriate equipment, supplies, documentation, and patient readiness.
  • Maintain CLIA compliance by adhering to established testing protocols, ensuring accurate specimen handling and documentation, performing quality control as required, and following all regulatory and organizational laboratory standards while upholding an uptodate CLIA office assistant laboratory license.
  • Maintain secure and appropriate access to external medical record portals, including laboratory, hospital, and imaging systems, to support efficient information retrieval and care coordination.
  • Promote teamwork and team building by supporting team members and demonstrating continuous efforts to uphold Medical Assistant professionalism and standards of practice.
  • Demonstrate adaptability by incorporating process changes and maintaining compliance with updated policies, procedures, and workflows.
  • Provide Medical Assistant float support as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
  • Obtain CLIA Office Laboratory Assistant License within 30 days of hire required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer systems and software used in a clinical environment preferred.
  • 2 years’ experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)/Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) preferred.
  • Due to real and potential conflicts of interest that exist when HOPES Behavioral Health providers render services to their coworkers, it is HOPES’ policy (Policy HR0005) that HOPES employees may not access HOPES Behavioral Health Services. For the same reason, current Behavioral Health patients/clients cannot be employed by HOPES. Accordingly, you hereby acknowledge and understand that if you are receiving services from a HOPES Behavioral Health provider at the time you are offered and accept employment with HOPES, you have the option of rescinding your acceptance of employment or finding a new behavioral health provider outside of HOPES before starting employment with HOPES.
